Well, I took the mxs in the lake today

I didn't like it in the lake. It was slow to sweep and heavy to swing. The 10" coil didn't float.

I much preferred my modded SurfMaster II, I like the high tone beep and dig in the water.

The 9 1/2" coil would probably go good in the water. It does with my SurfMaster II.

What I like to do, when water hunting, is to remove the steel spring clip from the top rod and run a nylon bolt/nut through the holes (when assembled) instead. This helps prevent fretting, with the resultant looseness, of the top join. It's a weakness of many of the White's detectors, both land & water.

Why the heck would you want a coil that floats? It hurts the wrist trying to keep the coil down with a coil that floats.

That was the good thing that the 10" coil doesn't float. There is a bit of stress sweeping that coil in the water. The 9 1/2" coil should swing well in the water. I don't know if it floats.

I liked this detector a lot but it still has a little problem that need fixing. Overall it's an amazing detector but I traded mine for a T2se. The costs were getting to much for me. I needed the waterproof headphones and the 9 1/2" coil. And I already have a waterproof detector. The SurfMaster II vlf is an amazing old detector. Works great in the water.
