Went detecting along the Housatonic River yesterday..gave the ocean a rest...if you are interested in the Housatonic river.., read on, please..

The Housatonic river gets its name from the Mohican phrase "usi-a-di-en-uk" ("beyond the mountain place")

this river flows into Long Island sound which is about 15 minutes from my home

I live on a high mountainside overlooking the Housatonic river... right near the center of the town...and I can see the confluence of the mighty Naugatuck and Housatonic rivers from my kitchen window....as I am doing the dishes

As a added note of interest, the US Navy named a ship for the Housatonic river

The "USS HOUSATONIC" has the distinction of being the first ship in history to be sunk by a submarine--the Confederate vessel "CSSHL HUNLEY'

This river I am sure is loaded with colonial coins because it was heavily commercialized in the "days of yore", and my friends have found colonials here.

Didn't find any colonials today..will be going back at low tide ..my favorite detecting time.

And HI to you, Lorraine! Nice group of coins found and I enjoyed the history lesson and have never heard of that river! Must be a beautiful view to look out your window and see two rivers as you are doing the dishes! My kitchen window has a Dogwood Tree and many birda and animals to see while cooking or doing dishes! The Dogwood is opening up now and will be in full bloom soon! So glad the cold weather didn't get it and won't harm it after it blooms! Last year the blooms were like two days in full and then a hard freeze hit and they turned black and fell off right away!

You must be living in God's country!

Hi Ma Betty,

I live t two streets up from the center of town...small town; my street ( Mount Pleasant ) was carved on the second tier of the mountain...up above my street are several other streets...right up the mountain side...I'm sure this area was inhabited by Native Americans so long ago..

One of the Fire companies which is on the main street below my street is named "Paugassett Company"..another Native American tribe.

The elementary school at which I taught is "Turkey Hill School"...it is , as the name implies built on a hill that was inhabited by Native Americans

If I was allowed to detect there, I'm sure that I would find lots of Indian Artifacts.

Lots of history around my home
