Went Out Metal Detecting for The First Time...

this year w/my 'New' Minelab X-terra 505. I didn't find much in the hour that I beeped around but I did learn that the #505 is a very sensitive machine. One of my finds came in @ 8"plus and turned out to be a rusty 'ole bobby-pin that registered a -6 and sounded off w/ the typical iron grunt. I'm using the stock coil, which is the 9" Concentric 7.5kHz and am giving serious thought to buying the 6" DD 18.75kHz coil for hunting the parks and other areas that contain a lot of trash. With the exception of a few features, there's not a lot of difference between the X-terra 505 and the #705 and I'm glad I kept the extra bucks in my pocket. My gut tells me this machine is highly under rated and one fantastic metal detector, for the money invested. I think it could be safely said that people, in general, spend more for a metal detector than they need to or maybe should, when most will do little more than hunt for coins, in thier local parks, school yards, and such places. Of course that's good for business...right?

I have a 6 inch dd coil and that thing has found boat loads of coins that I missed in trashy areas. I have also hunted with it in so called hunted out spots and found coins that others had missed.

Hey...Thanks Seven! That's what my local dealer tells me also. He has a new one in stock and I'll likely go that way, if I can't find a 'clean' used one @ a reasonable price.

I agree... you'll definitely be happy with the 6" 18.75 kHz coil. Light, easy to maneuver around, goes pretty deep, and easy to separate targets. And it's waterproof so you can use it in streams for gold, or at the beach and not worry about getting it wet.

A very sensitive machine indeed! I found a 1965 nickel at 5-6" the other day with the sensitivity only on 8 and the descrimination pattern on 3.Like you, I like my money in my pocket and I got my used 505 from Richard at Backwoods Detector Sales (a sponsor on this site) for $375 with a rain/dust cover. It was only used for a few hours and the customer traded up on another detector. Best $375 I have spent in a long time. Good luck out there and HH.
