Wet ground/dry ground... too wet/too dry ???

I know that you lose depth when the ground is dry as last years bird nest... and I know that it is better after a rain BUT... does detecting suffer in any way if the ground is too wet. It has really rained a LOT around here lately but next week looks sunny and between 50 and 60 for a high each day at least through Thursday.

(I also know, considering the competence of todays weather forecasters, it could rain all week and be 40 degrees. Have you noticed since they started using computer models to forecast... they seem to have lost the art?)

So, is there such a thing as too wet. I'm not talking about mud... I mean the ground looks fine but when you dig it's moist down 6 or 10 inches.

Thanks,

Julien

I don't know if there is such a thing as to wet, Julien, excluding mud, as some of my deepest targets have been dug with good moist ground. I do find, though, that id's read higher and in some cases, much higher, when the ground very wet. Like your ground, ours too has been extremely wet since early last fall with good moisture down to at least 10" or so. HH jim tn

Like you guys, if its moist it seems better, least better than bone dry. But, dunno bout the mud, I stay out of the fields when its muddy, to much work getting your boots unstuck while you work along, lol. But, if that crust is dry, semi dry, Im on it.
Yeah, weve had the rain also. Right now, its 68 and sunshine but my fields are soaking wet, so wifey ask this morning if I was going MDing today and I says, No Way Baby we gonna do what you wanna do. Hey, gotta get them brownie points when ya can.
HH,
John

Too much of anything can be bad but too much rain can cause iron to leach into the ground causing more masking.

Exactly Low-Boy
All to often I've seen major masking problems when the ground is soaked. Mostly when there is a lot of iron in the ground. My F75 does a lot better in moist ground but not soaked. In fact I've got a couple places where I have found some really old coins that I'm sure will be better hunting in the so call bone dry dirt. Way to much iron in the ground with the good targets. Now this is only what I've noticed, in my area over the years I've hunted.

I've noticed more falsing when the ground is soaked. Takes me a few holes before it dawns on me to turn down the sensitivity a bit.:geek:
