My 9 and half year old Explorer XS, still going strong and it sure has not disappointed me this current month! I started out on April 1st finding a 1793 Flowing Hair with Lettered Edge Large Cent!
Then on April 9th I found a KGIII Halfpenny that I did not think too much of at the time, except that it was a double clipped planchet one. But after posting the coin on the C4 forum the colonial experts there informed me the copper was another Batty 3826b Halfpenny, which up to three years ago only 3 were known, and I had one of those three! But now I own 2 of the 7 known, so that is kind of cool.
On April 15th, I managed one lonely Large Cent, but again, something special it was an 1825 and I did not have that year so it filled a hole in my collection.
Now, on April 17th, I had one of those hunts a colonial coin hunters dreams of. My son and I were hunting a new site, back in December he got 5 coins at the site, and we both went there in January and each got a coin, and I wanted to get back there once winter was over, so on April 17th, my son and I hit the site again. Wow, I got one old copper after another, the take for the day was 5 coppers for me and 1 for my son. But 3 of my coppers were Conn coppers and in decent shape to boot, also a Flying Eagle cent and a KGIII Halfpenny. My son got a 1794 Large Cent!
Needless to say a day like that anymore gets the blood flowing and you really want to get out again. Well yesterday was the day.
April 27th, I went back to the site by myself this time, planning on exploring the perimeter area of the homestead, but the recent overnight rains and the underbrush growing already, kind of made me decided to not beat the brush and get all wet and instead just hit the clearer areas of the perimeter. Great decision! After a few minutes of getting a few pewter and scrap brass pieces, I got a definite Silver hit on the XS! Down about 5-7 inches a big tan coin pops out of the ground, except I could see under the crud was a BUST HALF DOLLAR! I was stoked, I found something I never thought I would find, I always hoped of finding a Bust Quarter for a goal coin but not a Bust Half.
So I scanned the hole again before covering up and another coin reading, out pops another BUST HALF! I rescanned again and still another coin reading. This time a smaller thinner silver coin, which I figured was a Spanish silver due to the thinness (It was). One more time I scanned the hole and yes, another reading and this time a small Spanish silver appears. Four old silver out of one hole, the best "pocket spill" I ever found of silver! I decided to quit the hunt early and save the site for a return trip with my son.But on the way out I slowly worked my way to the truck and gosh, got another coin reading, this time a old, worn out but dated 1722 King George I Halfpenny!
So April 2010, even though not over yet, is for me, time for some yard work but wow, what a month. Here are the coin totals for April along with photos.
