What a month! One of my best ever for old coins

My 9 and half year old Explorer XS, still going strong and it sure has not disappointed me this current month! I started out on April 1st finding a 1793 Flowing Hair with Lettered Edge Large Cent!

Then on April 9th I found a KGIII Halfpenny that I did not think too much of at the time, except that it was a double clipped planchet one. But after posting the coin on the C4 forum the colonial experts there informed me the copper was another Batty 3826b Halfpenny, which up to three years ago only 3 were known, and I had one of those three! But now I own 2 of the 7 known, so that is kind of cool.

On April 15th, I managed one lonely Large Cent, but again, something special it was an 1825 and I did not have that year so it filled a hole in my collection.

Now, on April 17th, I had one of those hunts a colonial coin hunters dreams of. My son and I were hunting a new site, back in December he got 5 coins at the site, and we both went there in January and each got a coin, and I wanted to get back there once winter was over, so on April 17th, my son and I hit the site again. Wow, I got one old copper after another, the take for the day was 5 coppers for me and 1 for my son. But 3 of my coppers were Conn coppers and in decent shape to boot, also a Flying Eagle cent and a KGIII Halfpenny. My son got a 1794 Large Cent!

Needless to say a day like that anymore gets the blood flowing and you really want to get out again. Well yesterday was the day.

April 27th, I went back to the site by myself this time, planning on exploring the perimeter area of the homestead, but the recent overnight rains and the underbrush growing already, kind of made me decided to not beat the brush and get all wet and instead just hit the clearer areas of the perimeter. Great decision! After a few minutes of getting a few pewter and scrap brass pieces, I got a definite Silver hit on the XS! Down about 5-7 inches a big tan coin pops out of the ground, except I could see under the crud was a BUST HALF DOLLAR! I was stoked, I found something I never thought I would find, I always hoped of finding a Bust Quarter for a goal coin but not a Bust Half.

So I scanned the hole again before covering up and another coin reading, out pops another BUST HALF! I rescanned again and still another coin reading. This time a smaller thinner silver coin, which I figured was a Spanish silver due to the thinness (It was). One more time I scanned the hole and yes, another reading and this time a small Spanish silver appears. Four old silver out of one hole, the best "pocket spill" I ever found of silver! I decided to quit the hunt early and save the site for a return trip with my son.But on the way out I slowly worked my way to the truck and gosh, got another coin reading, this time a old, worn out but dated 1722 King George I Halfpenny!

So April 2010, even though not over yet, is for me, time for some yard work but wow, what a month. Here are the coin totals for April along with photos.

1793 Flowing Hair Large Cent
1784 est King George III HalfPenny Batty 3826b (7 known)
1825 Coronet Type Large Cent
1858 Flying Eagle Cent
1787 Connecticut Colonial
1787 Connecticut Colonial
1788 Connecticut Colonial
1775 King George III HalfPenny
1722 King George I HalfPenny
1782 Spanish One Real
1784 Spanish Half Real
1826 Capped Bust Half Dollar
1827 Capped Bust Half Dollar

So, my original, hard used Explorer XS I got in December 2000 is still going strong, been using the Pro Coil on it since they became available and just hope this detector holds together for many more hunts!!!

You had an EXCELLENT month of April hunting Don.
I hope my Explorer is still going that strong when
it's nine years old....Congratulations and HH
Gold Nuggets :wiggle:

:surprised: :yikes:]

Congrats on a fantastic April !! Like I said on your post on the other forum, that's the oldest 4 coin pocket spill I have ever seen, and maybe ever will see!!

I guess the Pro Coil was a great investment to extending the life of your XS. It just goes to show, any Explorer in capable hands will find the "Good Stuff"! :minelab:

PS - I'm going to stare some more at those Bust Halves....:yikes:

Wow! Thanks for sharing that story!

Any idea who lived there? Losing that kind of coin back then was almost unheard of unless money was no object. I hope you and your son make more great finds there. Congrats.

WOW Don, that's what I call a great year, let alone one month !!! Congrats - and you just KNOW that there is more hiding there !
I know coin condition has alot to do with soil conditions, etc but what is your method of cleaning and preserving the old coppers?
They look great !

FANTASTIC!!!!!!!!! That is an amazing number and quality of colonial coins. You are on a roll - you'll probably be digging a Mass. pine tree shilling soon. HH

Congrats, you must have an great spot. I am in Indiana and this area is not so good for old stuff. Hunting w/ your son is a +++. I'll mabe try w/ the grandson,
Ive got an old XS and mostly use Presets don't finf much other than memorials NO silver at all. Ive been hunting since 1970 used an old Metrotech. Once again great job.

I thought I had closed out April, but nope, add one more copper to the month. A 1729 King George II Halfpenny, I have many KGII but never had the year 1729, so that filled a hole! Now the month of April is over and time for yard work. Oh, also got a flower design button heavily gilted but also heavily corroded.
