What about the old Grand Master?

Can't find much about the old Grand-Master, other than it was Garrett's first shot at micro processors. Anyone ever use one? He went on to make several other models of them, CXs I think, I and II. Many opinions on those.
Got the thing at a yard sale. It had three cross-fire heads, a super sniper head and two Hot Heads. They asked fifty bucks for it all. I held up a twenty and they grabbed it. I went over to the school yard, got a quick clad penny and a nickel ( I like finding nickels). What are the quirks with this old clunker?

I have one and periodically use it.The true all metal mode gets some decent depth too. It has found me gold, silver and lots of coins.

I have the Grand Master Hunter which was made in 1986-7 I think. It has the analog meter movement and is dead on for ID. It is a single tone ID but once you get used to it you can tell a lot from the attack and decay if the signal. Not real deep but I have dug dimes at 8 inches. Last winter I sent it in to Garrett and they went through it and it works like new. However it weighs about five pounds which is large part of the reason for ordering the At Pro. Garrett has Proformance coils that work on it. I have the 7X10 elliptical and 10 x 14 DD coils. It will become my backup detector when the At Pro arrives.

Hey, that's the very first metal detector that I ever bought for myself(back in '89). still got it and it works as well as it did on the day I took it out of the box. Found a nice little gold nugget with mine over the summer on the claim. Great, deep and very sensitive all metal mode. Handles mineralization very well when properly ground balanced(especially with a double "D" search coil attached). I love the dual range discrimination (ferrous/non-ferrous). I don't mind at all that there's no fast track/auto ground balance because I prefer to balance manually (like Scorpion).

Thanks all for the posts. I am enjoying the thing. Cleaned it all up, removed 6 or 7 pieces of "sticky" Velcro stuck (I have no idea) all over the box. A little Armoral, it looks like new. Took it to an old burned down school, (1930s) found a "Merc" dime. Tried the 12" head and it has a little drift but once I know that, it's fine. Dug 2 minnie-balls with that set up. Minnie-balls are normal here in the Richmond, VA for 20 miles around. Think I'll give the "Sniper" a try, if it warms up a bit.

hay there.. My friend bought one about 10 years ago. well maby 13 or15.. If its an anolog then you may have problems with trying to do the "notch Discrimnation".. I have had several Garrett detectors and The cross fire coils were great.. Its the weight thats a little heavy and I also preferred not using the "bell tone" for coins.. Garrett is the best detector out there thats just my opinion but considering cost and their excellent warranty program I would never buy anything else.I started with a "Deep Seeker D S then a couple of ADS then A gold Stinger then the GTI's..I have been using a GTI 2000 sence 2001 and Can out hunt anybody out there with it.. I will post a few pics sometime.. Anyway a Detector is only as good as the man using it ..
