What advantage does the 6" DD coil have...

What advantage, besides being waterproof, does the 6" DD HF coil offer over the 5x10 HF DD elliptical coil? I have the 5x10 gold pack coil so would there be any advantage.

Other than being able to hit on slightly smaller gold, possibly being a little better in heavy trash and able to get into a little bit tighter locations, that's about it. I really like my 6" DD HF coil, but if I already had the gold pkg. coil, doubt if I'd see any need for getting the smaller coil. It is beneficial to have a 10.5" DD coil, mine pretty much splits time with the 6" DD coil.

Very VERY similar in detection characteristics. But in addition to what Mtnmn mentions, I believe the 6-inch coil offers better target separation. Lets say, for example, there are two targets buried 9 inches apart. And think of the target placement as being represented by the numbers on a clock. If the targets were at 3:00 and 9:00, then the 6-inch coil will not separate any better than the elliptical coil. But target are not always "side by side". What if you happened to be walking a different direction and those targets were lined up at 6:00 and 12:00? Both targets would be under the center bar of the elliptical DD coil at the same time. But since (in this example) the targets are 9 inches apart, regardless of the target "placement", the 6 inch coil will only hit on "one at a time". JMHO HH Randy

Digger, ok, I understand your scenario, but since I normally check any repeatable signal by rotating around the target, wouldn't it almost be the same except in a case where if detecting 2 targets at the same time could cause silent masking. I did an air test comparing my 10" MD DD coil vs. the 5x10 HF DD coil. Lost about 1.5" with the 5x10 coil on a quarter. Would the 6" be comparable depth wise? If you had the 5x10" would you get the 6"?

I'm in the same boat. I'm thinking my next coil will be a 3 khz for just that reason. If I come across the 6 in dd for a bargain price I'll probably add it to the arsonal, otherwise I can't justify buying it for the 4 less inches of separation. Plus the frequency is the same so there woundn't be that advantage either. IMHO. Now if I had a friend with one I could borrow, I might test it in some trashy grounds I've already hit hard,to see the comparison!

I'm convinced it's a great coil, but others come first for me.

Like you, on every target I hear, I "X" over it from multiple directions, to separate and isolate. The question then becomes, which targets are you hearing? By using multiple tones and zero discrimination, I eliminate the effects of target masking and effectively hear them all. But the main point of my post was, the odds of passing over multiple targets simultaneously are reduced when using a smaller sized coil.

I have both the elliptical and the 6-inch DD. In the places I hunt, I am able to run the 6-inch coil at a higher level of Sensitivity, compared to the eliptical. I can also offest my ground balance to a more positive setting, which I believe also allows me to detect deeper. With these settings, my 6-inch coil actually detects small targets more deeply than the eliptical coil will detect those same targets. Combine that with the superior separation capabilities, you can understand why my elliptical coil gets very little use. JMHO HH Randy

I also have the 705 gold..w/5x10 elliptical and the 9"concentric....and now the 6"DD since Wednesday/ still checking over previously detected areas...found the 2 Rossie's in the neighbors yard today 4" deep(38-40tid) within inches of each other/ but i could tell their were two separate signals...found the ID along the edge of my driveway had washers around it,but still weeded it out....Ive been here 30 years/no Beth here..bob.oz

The 6"DD is a fantastic little coil,a real stunner...
Used it on my trashy field and came up with the same amount coins as walking with the WOT,maybe luck, but this litie is like a magnet.

You will do better in trash. You can run hotter with the 6" DD and maintain stability. I try to use the bigger coils when I can but I always go back to the 6" DD for trash.
