What are the best headphones for exp II

jim/wpb

New member
The headphones that I am using are "treasure wise" and I believe them to be pretty bad for the agility of the exp II.

Can anyone direct me along the right path?

It's all a matter of how deep your pockets are and personal preference. I believe Sun Ray has just introduced a good pair of headphones. Koss makes a good unit. I understand Timber Wolf are excellent units. I bought the Grey Ghost NDT a few years ago and have been perfectly happy with them. I'm considering a pair of the new Bose headphones you see advertised on TV and adapting them for MD use. I have about 6 pair, and that's a hard question. I like them all. One's light and cool for summer, another keeps out the outside noise, etc. You get the picture. Is there one majic headphone, No. My best headphones fill up with sweat in the summer and have to dry my ears frequently.

I use Grey Ghost originals, and have no complaints except I HATE my ears sweating in the hot weather. Believe it or not, I use a pair of Radio Shack Titanium lightweights when it's too hot or I need to hear my surroundings. They sound great, have their own volume control, and NO SWEATING !!!!

Headphones are offered in many different designs. Each having different features or fasits.

Most better phones such as Gray Ghost's, SunRay, RatPhones, and other's. Offer a lifetime warranty to the buyer....If you like them they could work forever. On the other hand they come at a price. You are paying for the lifetime warranty with the higher price....but you get the insurance and quality. Most of these phone's start at around 85.00, and go up from there. It is best to try the phones of close friend if they have a pair that you have interest in purchasing for yourself.

I for one have several pairs as Holedigger has metioned he owns. I use the SR gold on my Explorer, Troy Phones on on my shadows, SR Pro for my X-Terra's. The reason for the two Pair of SR headphones is that I recently upgraded to the Gold phones.

I understand everyones comments perfectly. My conditions in South Florida contain a lot of outside noise as in wind and surf. In addition, it's hot and sweaty here. To me I'd rather sweat than miss a digger.

If you could say buy one headphone regardless of price knowing that sound quality and external sound deadening is required what would you do?

Not to belittle any brand. I hunt the New Jesey beach's near the surfline. I had been using the SR pro's.....until they recently came out with the Gold series. I have not had alot of time with them being they are so new. I do like them so far for comfort and sound quality.

Sounds like I'm gonna try the Sunray gold

Hello Jim.....as you have heard from Holedigger and Joe, the Sun Ray Gold, and the DetectorPro Gray Ghost are top notch headphones. I have been hunting Indian Wars relics on the Colorado, Kansas, Nebraska and Wyoming plains. While I don't have the sound of the surf to worry about, I often find myself in strong prairie winds, and 90 degree F temperatures.

I have been using the Gray Ghosts since they were first released, and believe that they are solely responsible for me not missing many of my deep finds. I have started using the Sun Ray Gold just this spring, and gotta tell you they are awesome too!

Short of some newer light weight, barely cover your ears, and not block out the noise headpohones, all GOOD headphones are gonna cause sweating, can't really get rid of that in the summer. When it turns colder in the fall, those same headphones help keep the ears toasty.

I don't agree that you are paying just for the warranty however, as the two headphones I mentioned above, are very high quality, and able to amplify and deliver the tones to you even in high noise area. I believe, that is really what you are paying for.

If you have spent the money for the Explorer II, don't comprimise on cheaper, less technical headphones....use the best - with the best! :detecting:

Thanks for the info...and you're right I spent a lot of money and time with a lotta the learning curve yet to go, so I don't want to compromise my experience.

Real good. Cut the first 2 inches off some old half crew socks. Unfold the two halves and stretch them over the ear pieces where the earpiece and sock are against your ear. They soak up the sweat and keep your ears dry Warm in the winter time. If you have knobs like I do on My Troy Pro's which you can use on any detector, and don't have to flip any switches just plug them into any detector and you are ready to go or my Timber wolf's, all you got to do is stretch the socks over the knobs and switches put a small hole in the spot the knobs and switches are and the socks don't come off and they stay on your phones. Hope that is cheap enough for you guys. I know how tight I am. I have many pairs and don't even wash them anymore just throw them away when they get dirty. Put another pair on.Keep on :detecting:. :bouncy: :super: Later Jerry aka Tinfoil

I have tried a lot of different headphones myself on my Sovereign, and Explorer and a few other detectors. Now on the Explorer I use the Troy Pros as the volume is better than most, but I have been told the tone quality on the Sun Ray Golds are better, but don't have the volume the Troy Pros do. On my Sovereign there is only 1 pair I use as to me the tones are so much better so I can ID better. I use the Timberwolfs on it.
If you got very good hearing the Gray Ghost line or the Sun Ray pros are the good, but if you need the volume like I do the Troy Pros or the Timberwolfs is what I recommend.

The koss home audio phones that come with the explorer are great on your home audio system , a good freq response , now for use with the explorer i have to admit the tone reproduction seems pretty good ,i was happy with the tone reproduction real smooth clear tones, the only thing i HATED was the fact that they wouldnt stay on my head ,they kept falling off.

Gosh there are a bunch of excellent ones out there and a lot comes down to personal preference and ones hearing abilities..Might visit a multi-line dealer and sort of try some on for size..
Personally years ago after using several high priced brands my local dealer introduced me to Calrads( around $20.00) and over the years have used many units and they worked well on all of them..This last pair I have been using hard for the last 6-7 years with nary a problem and of course have a brand new pair in the trunk as a back up.
Some may say are you crazy using a high priced detector and a cheap priced headphone but my answer is they work well for me and hold up well which would probably be the same answer given by a felow using hig priced ones so whatever works I guess...

I always have my volume maxed out on the explorer but i always wish it had that bit extra volume , its barely enough in my opinion , im sure i miss some of the deep stuff as my hearing is less than perfect.

My wife always tells me I'm going deaf......Some of it selective hearing loss...although you have a great point with the volume because the volume on the exp II is what I consider marginal so a little amplification is a great thought.

Black Widows hands down. I have used them all Including Bose acoustic 2, and with explorer II. The Black Widows are a perfect marriage. I highly recommend them. They have signal boost and Volume control. They work Really nice. They are Loud, and believe me on this, because I too have some hearing loss.

Tom

I tried 5 different sets of the Black Widows in case I may have had a bad set as some say they had very loud volume, but I find the Gray Ghost Ultimates and the NDT do have a slightly better volume and the headphones used on the Uniprobe were the best volume of the Gray Ghost. The Troy pros and the Timberwolfs have the better volume hands down in my opinion.
If you get a chance try a set and see what you think.
Because of my hearing I added a amp to my Explorer to amplify the volume when I used some of the different headphones and now that I use the Troy Pros I don't use the amp as the volume is loud enough.

Rick

Why would you want to use a cheap set of headphones on a high end detector? The more expensive headphones is the way to go and I myself have been using the Gray Ghost NDT's for a few years now. I liked the tone quality and the feel of them so much that I went out and bought a second pair for a back-up. These headphones come with 2 cords since it can be disconnected from the headphones itself if the cord goes bad. Great set of headphones. The Timberwolves are one of the best also and if a person needs volume, these are the headphones of choice.

:thumbup:Right on James......the RatPhones Pro Dual Volume Controls, are awesome phones as well...the volume level capability is higher than most, and the cords (RatTails) are removeable and replaceable as well.

I want to express my thanks to all. I went for the best as Chuck, NJ Joe, and the North Dakota boys suggested. I tried the Sunray Pro Gold, Gray Ghosts, and the Black Widows as these were only ones I could get my hands on to try. I have to say that they were all exceptional, and it was a hard choice, but I chose the Black Widows.

But you know what?.... I was getting comfortable with the Treasure Wise and the new dimension of more and better sound with the Black Widows has made me go backwards on the learning curve. But...I believe it will help my pace in re-learning immensely.

Many Many Thanx
