what are they?

I've found countless things in my yard that I cannot identify, but I'd call these my first actual whatsits.

any help would be appreciated, and from reading this forum for a month now, I suspect this will be cleared up.

I should have taken the photo with something to note the size... next time..

they are between the size of a nickel and a quarter.
