What are your impressions on the x30 ?

Any good?
Is it light?
When they first came out some say they would shut off by themselves, or on.
Thinking about trading an IDX off and thinking about the x30.

Do the x30 do any good on the ocean beach? Maine :))

Thanks

Bruce

Great detectors. Very lightweight and well balanced. Haven't heard of any problems recently with detector shutting off. It will provide more information than your IDX. My main concern with you getting the X-30 is that it has a factory preset ground balance. Expecially since you will be using it at the beach. All three X-Terra models are based on the same physical platform. But the X-50 and X-70 offer more features. In addition to "narrower" notches and more refined sensitivity settings, having an adjustable GB on the 50 (or automatic GB and even a separate beach mode on the X-70) might be something you would consider. Very seldom have i ever needed ground balance or automatic tracking in the past 6 or 8 years, and even then the detectors worked good enough to find whatever, In Indiana, and other places i detect, Tn. and Fl. i do not use or need the GB or any other of the features that the X30 does not have, so I did nothing but buy the X30, it works fine, If your'e in an area where mineralization is a problem, -gold fields or black sand , you need a 50 or 70, , but i don't need it, and am quite happy with the 30,(the factory pre sets work fine for ME) so I figured why spend money for something that I don't need or won't use, of my 4 detectors that i use all over the place, none have any features that are required for mineralization, depends on what your'e looking for and where, and if you want to spend the money for the features,, kinda like drivin a Hummer to the Pak a sak for a gallon of milk, 3 blocks and you could walk, read the FAQ's-FAQ's:detecting::thumbup::minelab::usaflag:

you may be right maybee im toten to much with the 70 but its all good and fun just nice to know when you need tat lil extra you got it plus i dont like milk

heck im still tryn to keep all these coins from jumping out of the ground and landing in my pocket ......yea wait im waking up this is a fun site

I know you are a big fan of the Musky, as I am. Just wondering if you are able to run your Advantage in the Fixed mode or if you use manual GB on it?
With my moderately mineralized ground, I can run my Advantage in Fixed mode with good results. But in some sites, setting it manually definitely gives me an "Advantage". Same reason I prefer the X-50 or X-70 over the X-30. All are good detectors. But setting the GB for a specific site is a nice option. HH Randy

The Fixed works better for me, works great in this soil, (our soil is bout like potting soil), all detectors i had (many) with GB and whatall seemed to work better in fixed around here, so that's what i use, the X 30 works great, trash and all, just dandy, all of em Advantages, colts, C$,1212's,1270's, Head Hunters, Tesoros, Whites,Nauts, bunch o others, even BH's, all seem to work better with Pre set in my detecting spots, guess i just got sorta nothing soil :detecting::thumbup::usmc::usaflag:

G'day Bruce.
The 30 is a good machine. it weighs 1.3kgs (an Explorer weighs 1.9kgs) If you drop the batteries into the housing as you would tend to do instinctively, then you will have problems with the machine wanting to shut down on you (the springs in the battery compartment become compressed) so put the batteries in while holding the detector in a horizontal plane. That should stop that problem from occurring. The X-Terra 30's main weakness, would have to be when it comes to pinpointing a target. Not very good. As was pointed out to me here a few months ago though, it can be improved by detuning (pressing the pinpoint button twice more while still over the target). if you intend to hunt a beach regularly with a fixed ground balance machine, then in my books, the 30 will be your choice machine. For a couple of reasons. 1) the V-flex technology in these machines start to shine in these situations. The design purpose of V-flex ( which simply means that analogue circuits have been replaced by digital ones) is to allow the X-Terra's to operate with a lot more immunity to electrical and ground mineralisation interference than most machines. they are still effected by them, just less. I have operated my X-Terra30 on a number of beaches in Sydney with the standard coil on it, with no problems. I have only once operated it in the water, with waives crashing over it while I swung it and it didn't skip a beat. I tried to do this with my Ace on a beach a 100 miles to the south and the Ace was rended useless. that beach may simply have had a more serious mineralisation problem though.
The second thing that you can do with the 30 is get the medium frequency 10 and a half inch round DD coil. It will help the 30 operate with even more immunity to ground mineralisation, give much better coverage of real estate at depth and becomes a very good machine to pinpoint with! I would have bought this coil for my machine by now if I hadn't bought an XS Explorer recently ( which has the same coil as I just described to you). Good luck with which ever machine you choose to use.
Mick Evans.
