what cameras do you guys use to take good close up pictures???

SONY Mavica - 10X Zoom. For the money (325 or so) it cant be beat. Just lay the coin in your hand and shoot. Look at my posts this past week and you can see some of the pics it takes.

any digital camera over 3 megapixels with the capability to accept an after market adapter and a macro lense. some cameras offer macro capability built in to the camera but are insufficient to get the real close ups you may desire. my macro lense came with the adapter and cost 65.00 dollars and then you will need a camera stand. that should cost between 40-50 bucks. once you get your gear, set it up then turn off the flash on your camera. a small lamp or even a flash light is better than the flash. set the camera somewhere between 6-7 inches from your coin, then use the telephoto button to zoom in to the coin. the camera will adjust the focus. with a little practice, you should turn out great close ups. i hope this helped you. HH

If your looking for best quality I think this is a lot better than I can get with my shooter.

With closeup lenses attached, Nikon offers the best Macro quality for the buck, but I had trouble with their reliablility so I went to Canon.
One thing to consider on Macro shots is, closer is not necessarily better. You need space between the object you are photographing and the camera to allow your light source to hit the object. If the lens is less than an inch or so from it, it can be very hard to get the proper lighting and having shadow problems.
I photograph most of my coins and relics at a distance of approx 4 inches away, which allows my lights to shine on the object. I use the optical zoom to fill the screen with the shot.......
Here is the Jersey coin I just found yesterday, cleaned and I took two macro photos of it. One in natural sunshine(top) and one with indoor mag lighting and Automatic White Balance. The sunshine picture is more true color but the lower photo shows the coin's detail to a different degree. Always nice to compare............

If you buy a camera that has macro, capable of using a remote shutter release, tripod mount and capability to set the white balance.
This is straight out of my Minolta Dimage 5 which is an old 3.3 MP outdated camera. Plus they are compressed quite a bit which makes them look worse. Seen cameras like mine sell on ebay for less than $130 used before. But it is one he!!a camera, IMO.
These were quick shots. I can take much better shots with better lighting. Late afternoon sunlight is best. I can get some shots outside by hand that makes these look real baaaaad.

Sweet coin and great pic Ric! LOL That one has one of the strongest reverses I have ever seen on a dug barber dime! NICE and a semi key date too............

Thanks. It has luster that you can't see in the pic. But it does have light scratches also from drying with a towel. I about got sick. <img src="/metal/html/frown.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":(">

Here's an ebay bargain selling brand-new for under $100.00.
Poor lighting with this gilt button pic but you can see how well the marco get's up close, That's fuzzy compared had I used better lighting and was using the lowest setting for quicker pic loading.

I just sent my Nikon 4300 in because the lense won't extend upon startup. This morning I got a invoice from Nikon stating it wasn't covered under warrenty and it would cost a little over $200 to repair, so I was gonna tell them to stick it.
Instead I called and it was resolved very easily. The reason they said it wasn't covered was that I didn't include a sales receipt. I explained I had registered it and also received a rebate and they should have records of them. The rep said they don't compile a data base with that info and excepted my word they it wasn't within the warrenty period.
Glad I took the time to hash it out with them, I just hope it holds up as well as my Kodak 265 has the last 5 years.

Hello Copperhead,
The picture above is using the lowest Marco pix setting, It's so fine don't need to use the higher settings otherwise it would take longer for the pic to upload on the screen.
Dang good camera and if bought on eBay they retail brand-new for about $100.00, Includes video as well.

i couldn't get my nikon to perform like that so i went with an add on macro. i don't use this camera for outside shots so it doesn't matter much. i got one of those skinny sonys for christmas. i use that one for field use. i know leica digital cameras were made by fuji so i assumed they were good cameras. i didn't know they were that good. and can't really beat it with most P&S cameras.
For other stuff I use a Canon 300D or lately the 20D with 100mm macro. But that is overkill for taking on a hunt wiht you. It is nice however if you are at home.

Fuji, Canon, and Nikon all make nice P&S camera's, but I would opt for one that didn't have the tiny little recessed lens. They may be able to make a camera function that is that small, but not a quality lens.
This link in an example of a P&S with a better lens:

This is a link of one that is not:

I would also opt for at a bare minimum 3 MPs.
Just my two cents.
