what coil should I get

I was wondering what coil I should get. I have some old parks that are loaded with trash I wanted to get something that will help with an over abundance of signals.
With all the great people on this sight buying so many different coils I thought I could save some money on buying the right coil the first time.
Thanks Steve

6X8 SEF will wade through the trash like a champion. For really trashy and I mean reeeaaally trashy, a Sunray X 5. You have to have patience with both but with a 5 inch coil you can barely move forward on any detector. I love both and don't hardly ever take the SEF off except when I feel like I have a special application to move to a bigger or smaller coil. The Sunray X 8 is superb also just for some reason I use the 6X8 more. The X8 is a good bit lighter too than the SEF. You would be pleased with all of the three but for me the SEF stays on the E Trac.

For trashy areas, the 8x6 is my "go to" coil. Believe it or not...you can actually cover alot of ground with the 8x6. This coil has excellent target seperation. Im also hearing alot of good things about the Sun Ray X-5 if your site is extremely trashy.

I've got a minelab 8" works great for me.

I really like using my Joey Coil 5x10. I have a place with a lot of trash and I use this coil and does very well.

OK Steve, you've received 4 replies and now have positive comments for 4 separate coils: The 8x6 SEF, the Sun Ray X-5, the Minelab 8", and the 5x10 Joey! I'm following this thread because I have the same exact question as you. I need a smaller coil for a trashy site, and don't know which one to get. Last week, I ordered the 6" DD EXcelerator EQ2 coil. It's the most affordable and I have also read good reviews for that coil. Problem is that it's backordered with no ETA, and now I'm having second thoughts. I'm leaning towards the 8x6 SEF or the Sun Ray X-5. (They're both backordered too...) Hopefully we will get some additional comments to hear the pros and cons of these various coils.

Thanks, -David.

There is an incredible number of great coils for the E-Trac/Explorer series detectors and I'm sure all are great as well.I will admit that my most used coil is the stock 11' pro coil as it has great depth, picks through the trash respectively and is lightweight as well.My personal favorite for ultra trashy sites is the Sun Ray X-5.Love this little coil! I also own and use regularly a 6'' Excellerator, the 8'' Minelab FBS 800,The Sunray 12'' and a 15'' WOT.All are great and have their uses from site to site.As a little note, many of the members here rave about the 8x6 SEF for trashy sites.I have no experience with this coil but I will soon be purchasing one to give it a go! Best of luck sir!

The 6x8 is my choice because it is great at picking out good targets in trash and also goes deep. I dug a silver metal the size of a half dime at 9" last week.:thumbup:

conductor7e and cttodd know this machine very well they have helped me a great deal I think conductor7e has tried every coil known to man the other thing is you should see their silver collection and those northern boys know how find that silver.

Hunting with many other E Trac owners , there is a wide variety of coils being used .....My hunting buddy uses an Excellerator EQ2 6 " coil ....I use a Sunray X-5 ....I know others using the 6x8 SEF .......I would be hard pressed to pick the best coil out of all of them ....They're all good in the trash as long as you SLOW DOWN when using it ......It's so small that it's easy to miss tagets if you don't take your time and slow down ....Jim

Sunray X8 and/or Excellerator 6", both are light, seperate really well and get good depth.

how you move. Moving slowly for deep coins can make a Pro Coil or a 10x12 SEF coil behave more like a "small coil". When I sold my ProCoil and started using the SEF, I was a little worried that I'd have trouble separating targets in a trashy environment. Move slowly enough and learn the 'Minelab wiggle' and you would do just fine with either of the coils I've mentioned.
