What Did You Get?

My wife got me a very thoughtful gift this year. She was able to find me a record album from one of my favorite rock bands. Autographed and authenticated. I'm going to make a really nice frame for it and hang it up in my office.

I certainly understand about those family emergencies! I hope your 2012 will be much better. Personally, I am ready to say a big GOODBYE to 2011. I lost two VERY dear friends, a cousin I was close to, and my daddy. Tim had an accident and had to have emergency surgery, daughter had kidney stones, Tim had kidney stones, had major family trouble, parents had to move away... and on and on. It was one thing after another all year long. BUT, I'm still blessed and still smiling! Looking forward to a better year in 2012. Glad you got to enjoy your gift exchange. :)

What kind of pocket knife did you get, Hank?

We've all heard it said that "It's the thought that counts." The cost of an item and or gift has nothing to do with it. Why compare, what I received, with anyone else? The most wonderful gift any of us has ever received has been eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord, if we believe in and trust Him. What more could anyone ask? - - - - Sorry! Apparently I missed the point. It appears so much focus is on 'Stuff' rather than 'The Reason for the Season'. Yes...I received some neat gifts but the things that mattered most go unanswered or 'ungifted', if you will.

The question was not an attempt to compare anyone's gift with a gift someone else received. Nothing was said about sharing the cost of ANY gift received. It's a simple fact of life that the majority of people participate in gift giving and gift receiving at Christmas time - maybe not ALL people, but most. The question, "Did anyone get anything special, unusual, or exciting for Christmas? What did you get? Lets here about it!" was a very simple attempt to get people talking and sharing if they received anything SPECIAL - UNUSUAL - or EXCITING for Christmas (people sometimes do receive gifts they treasure and/or enjoy). And, if so, would you like to share with the other people on the forum what you got. I don't believe we could find ANYONE on the forum who would not agree that JESUS is the Reason for the Season, and that His gift to us could NEVER compare to any earthly gift we receive here. And most would agree that time with family is much more valuable than any gift under the tree. If people did not participate in giving/receiving gifts, then that's fine! But you shouldn't take offense to harmless conversation among those who want to share what they got. I am NOT focused on the "stuff" rather than the "Reason for the season." and haven't been since I was a child. Matter of fact, I haven't even mentioned what I personally received. But I was told that the better question would have been "What did I give?" Without being specific, I did and gave plenty that was in no way "Christmas gift" related. However, I don't find it necessary to boast about any of that or share who, what, where, nor how much. If you're going to do it or give it and then boast about it, you might as well have kept it to start with.

Matthew 6

1. Take heed that ye do not your alms before men, to be seen of them: otherwise ye have no reward of your Father which is in heaven.

2. Therefore when thou doest thine alms, do not sound a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.

3. But when thou doest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth:

4. That thine alms may be in secret: and thy Father which seeth in secret himself shall reward thee openly.

5. And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.

6. But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.

Too bad that you are offended by a question that was in no way meant to compare, boast or anything else. If you don't like a question or post, maybe it would be better not to say anything at all. I find that there are many things I choose not to reply to or open my mouth about unless I feel that it attacks me personally or something I deeply believe in. It tends to keep down strife and stirrings. However, I did choose to respond this time because it is often ridiculous how some things posted here are picked apart.

Now THAT is really cool! What band?

Lisa

Thanks Lisa. Yes, it was a very cool gift. In fact she bought a copy, without knowing it, of the very first album I ever bought. The band is 'The Who' and the album was 'Meaty Beaty Big and Bouncy'. Funny name for an album. I was like 10 years old when I bought it. To think half the band members have passed and the other half are in their late sixties.
Time sure does go fast.

me bad, too, but not because I didn't give to those who needed help, but don't give Christmas gifts to all my gang, as way too many to buy for, when finances won't allow it! At least I didn't get a bag of COAL! Theresa, mine and yours gifts will come later and from the Lord, for what we do for those who are in need and give what we do from our hearts as God provides for us to do, will eventually come back and I do receive many blessings from Jesus, although many would think they were just ordinary...but aren't...I have had my hot-water heater since 1974 which was here before that and my extra 1960 frig (1964 freezer quit working) is still working, so that and others like it are true blessings for God provides for His own! Could use some repairs to be able to sell my house for a better price, but either way God's plans work out for me, I will be just fine...for I know Jesus Loves me and I love Him! Amen! Ma Betty

Not saying that those on here don't do the same but the greatest and best gift of all was God's gift to us by sending His one and only begotten Son, Jesus, to earth to die and live again for us that we might be saved in the forgiving power and grace of our Lord Jesus, as our own personal Savior by believing in and accepting Him! No greater gift is there but His laying down His life for all sinners, which we are until redeemed by confessing all of them! Amen! Ma Betty

We all tend to see things more or less eye to eye in here. That is why I like it here. I also like the fact that differences of opinion pop up, and as near as I can tell every one still walks away friends (so to speak).

All in good fun, thanks for asking Lisa. I got a new digger and a set of blue prints so I can build a belt sander for making knives and razors. Oh and I almost forgot a gift card to Tandy leather factory. I see a some leather working in my future.

+1 on the good pocket knife. Can't be beat.

Here is a thought. I kinda miss my old black and white 13" TV. It really had no presence and did not scream WATCH ME.

Jeff

Sounds like you are all set for the knife making. My husband would really like to get into knife making but I'm not sure he will ever follow through. Building your own belt sander? Wow! That ought to be really neat! Thanks for sharing, Jeff! :)

Your wife gets an A+ for the gift idea and effort! She did good! Glad you like your gift and have something you can see and enjoy every time you go into your office.

Wow this is unbelievable. Amazing. I just don't have words!!!! I know what one of my New Year's Resolutions is going to be. To NEVER come to this "Christian" forum again much less post anything. There just are no words to say more.

I feel the same way and I've been thing about leaving the finds' forums and FB, too! Haven't been on it long, but it isn't any different from the world most of the time and people don't seem to care about the truth of the Gospel of Jesus! I know most of you detect and since I cannot any more.....I really don't have anything to post about but my faith in Jesus and how life is treating me, so I post too much about myself and how I feel.....that is my way for I am a writer and not a talker! May stay for the company, as being alone so much I do need to read the posts but I have godvine.com now and just love it....the only thing that really given to me by going on FB! May God Bless us to be peaceful and in harmony! Amen! We older folks without a family get more lonesome and sadly depressed during the holidays and on SS have less finances....even though we have Jesus! I hope you understand about me and others.....It is not like when we had family with children at home! Love ya in Jesus, anyway! Amen! Ma Betty

Wow! When reading this I feel as though I am listening to my Five yr old class bickering. It is a bit more excusable coming from the Five year olds who lack maturity, spiritual discernment and knowledge of GOD's word. IF someone is unhappy, LEAVE. It's really quite simple, is it not? I see no good that can come out of DRIVE-BY POSTINGS that promote dischord...doesn't the bible say GOD despises such? Personally, I do not appreciate the inference that was made concerning boasting about Christmas presents. This discussion was meant to be light-hearted. If a person is tithing, volunteering, following GOD's commandments, etc, I see no harm in presents if a person can comfortably do so. I can just hear the comments made by non-Christians viewing this thread..."the "CMD posted are at it again!". Let it be said I am not singling anyone out here or QUOTING another poster. If anyone would like to discuss anything with me, send me a PM.

I like hearing what everyone got for gifts. Makes me feel like I know them and their hobbies a little better.

All in good fun... part of giving is receiving. I use to not be very good at that. I like seeing that others have people in their lives that care enough to give a thoughtful gift. I also like seeing there are folks who are still capable of doing so in spite of the poor economy.

Jeff

Lisa, get him a copy of the $50 knife shop by Wayne Goddard. If a man really wants to he can make knives for real cheap. I think the 1st 2 I made cost me something like $15 total. If you (he) would like advice PM me.

Unfortunately I'm the guilty party that brought discord to "What Did You Get". I misunderstood the intent of the posting and went off on a tangent. To Lisa and all of you, I do apologize. Lisa was right ... if I don't like a particular posting, I can choose to ignore it or think more before responding. Believe it or not, I meant well but didn't think it thru before responding. I suppose it's because I noticed so much materialism throughout this year and especially this holiday season that it made me sick spiritually. So when I noticed the posting written as "What Did You Get" rather than being written with a spiritual context, I freaked out and responded badly. I'm sorry.
