Hi all, Just wanting some opinions on this deal I found on a used Tiger shark detector. It is a 8 yr. old unit in almost new condition and comes with a 8 inch Detachable coil. The price I got it down too was $425.00 I know allot of people want the versatility of the detachable coil. Thanks all and HH.

pointer80,

..It depends......I called the Tesoro factory, the detachable coils are no longer being produced. There is nothing wrong with that system, other than the availability of extra coils. Their supply of waterproof connectors dried up, they tried to make their own, but now they hard wire them. I have a Tiger Shark that I bought new in 2001, never had a problem....But I picked up a new old stock coil on the classifieds and set it back as my 'back up' coil. If you are looking for versatility, my question is..."does the Tiger Shark come with extra coils?" or do you have a an opportunity to purchase other replaceable coils?

I think Tesoro also upgraded the housing right? On the old models the knobs were not accessible like on the current models.Didn't you have to open the cover to adjust the controls? They say the tiger is one excellent fresh water detector.I just got the Sand Shark and the knobs are exposed to the operator.

I think the price is a hair high for one that old. If you call a forum sponsor you can get one new for a little bit more. I just bought a new one and have only got to use it once because of the never ending winter we are having. If you are going to do salt water then get a Sand Shark like SpiritRelic has. For fresh water the Tiger Shark is one ring and coin finding machine. I will never part with mine. If you were send the one in with the detachable coil for service and there was a problem with the coil or cabling, you will get it back hard-wired. At $350 I would consider it worthwhile, for $425 I would go new. Message me and I will tell you where to get it at a great price.

You can buy a new one at Windy City Detectors for $580.00 shipped. I know I bought one for that price with 8 inch coil.

I don't mind buying used metal detectors. However, I will never buy a used detector that submerges. You need to be 100% confident and knowledgeable about the state of the seals and case. It just takes a little water to cost you a lot of money. I unfortunately have first hand experience and cooked a detector that allowed water in via the headphone jack.

I would have to agree about having a brand new submersible unit but the one I had was used and it was just fine and you may be like me and on a budget. Unless the machine looked brand new, I also think its a bit pricey for used. Offer $375 and thats a much better deal.

Thanks everyone for the replies. I think everyone is right, as for a water machine a new machine with lifetime warranty is the way to go. HH everyone.

I would get a new rubber gasket/o ring for it after 8 years of non-use it may be brittle and start leaking.
