I've never found one and was curious as to what they are made of? What do they sound like? High tone? Medium? Thanks!

What do your belt plates sound like?

Yep like beer cans. I dug two of mine right after digging beer cans & they sounded identical. Its strange though my last plate I dug about 8/9 years ago hit just like a bullet. In fact I was digging bullets all around it. It was a partial breast plate. My buddy Digsgti just found a breast plate last weekend & he said it sounded like a bullet. HH

From my experience, most of them hit like an aluminum soda can like the other guys said. One of them did hit quite a bit lower, it was a baby US buckle. It was in the button/bullet range.

I've only dug two US oval belt buckles thus far, the first one I dug April 9, 2011 here in Virginia where I live. The "target" was about 8 inches down, and my F75 locked on mid 60s which is typical of a drop high caliber bullet .54, .58. 69 etc. When I dug down about 8 inches I saw he oval desk face down (puppy paws/hooks up). The F75 was registering/locking on bullet reading due to the fact the rear of the belt plate/buckle is lead with the brass hooks thus giving off a mid tone lead range.
Fast forward to last Wednesday, Dec 4, 2013 I dug my 2nd US oval belt buckle at my friend's homestead in Virginia. This time however my F75 LTD locked on in the upper 80s indicating a silver coin or another period CW button. Digging down I could make out the "U" from the side wall and removed the buckle. Because the buckle was face up-my F75 was locking on the high brass tone which the face of the plate is brass.

i just recently found my first eagle breast plate and it hit just like an old cent, except for the reading was much bigger than that of a cent
