What I found for real finds this last weekend.

James N.D.

New member
I know you all been waiting for me to post any finds this weekend so here they are. For as little as I did get out, I did pretty well I thought in such a short time. I detected for a bit on Saturday Evening and for about 2 1/2 hrs and got a few keepers. Sunday I went out for about 3-4 hrs and found a few more and I know there is more to be found. I found 5 Silver. 2 Mercury Dimes dated 1918 and 1942-d. 2 Roosevelt Dimes dated 1956 and 1964-d and 1 Canadian Dime which I found at the hunt site and must have been in someones pocket change due to us never using Canadian Silver in our hunts. It was dated 1968. I also found 2 Silver Roosevelt Dimes but I didn't picture them here since they were lost from an old hunt of ours and really don't count as real finds. I found 5 Nickels which were 2 Buffalo Nickels dated 1915 and 1936. The 1915 had to have the acid treatment since I couldn't make out the date. The other 3 Nickels were older Jefferson Nickels dated 1940-d,1941-d, and 1946-d. It seemed that I was kinda hot on older Nickels this weekend for some reason but only if I would have found a V-Nickel. Oh Well, maybe next time out! I also found 1 Really Nice Indian Head Penny dated 1907 and there is a pic of front and back of it. I almost passed it off as a zinc cent but dug it anyways and I am glad I did. I also found 8 Wheats dated 1910,1918-d,1919,1944-d,1945,1945-d,1950-d, and 1953. I also found another 1959-d Lincoln Memorial Cent. I am going to post the Misc. finds with this post and I will have another post below this one for the other finds I am about to list due to space. I found another Good For Token which is Good For 5c In Trade / C.L. Carpenter Dickey, N.D. made out of Aluminum and is in excellent condition. I also found a Gold Wedding Band but there is a down side to it. In the inside it says 1/20 10K GF with 2 small arrows pointing at MH, what ever that is? I also am going to post a pic of my broken Arm Cup from Saturday's Hunt since it is rumored that the new black Arm Cups are stronger and won't break. Yea!! Sure they won't!! :rage: It is a good thing I bought an extra one from Rick (ND) a few days before the hunt or I would have had to hunt the Silver Hunt without an Arm Cup also. Pic's are below.[attachment 33530 Silver.jpg][attachment 33536 Nickels.jpg][attachment 33534 IndianFront.jpg][attachment 33535 IndianBack.jpg][attachment 33537 Cents.jpg][attachment 33538 Misc..jpg]

Hey James, nice finds. Did you find anymore in the yard we were in? Did you get into the yard where the guy moved the dirt? When I got home I also had an extra wheatie in my pocket. It was a 1909, couldn't find an s vdb, maybe next time.

 James, how do you do it? Color me bewildered. I spent two hours on the site of an old country school today, which was a wheat field this year, and found two buttons, both of which say oshkosh b' gosh, two square nails, some fragments of aluminum, some kind of high conductivity valve handle, and a few pieces of junk. I've done one other old country school site (late spring)and found about 16 wheat pennies and a Barber half, 1897. Some country schools had more activity than others apparently, or I haven't yet hit the hot spot at this one.

Do you ever get skunked?

Oh, I should mention that I found a wheatie at the B-ville park on Saturday, a 1946D. Does that mean I should really go over that area thoroughly?

Looking forward to seeing you this weekend. And WTG on those great finds. Did you dig any junk?

I almost forgot. There is a person or person's running around North Dakota in 2 Pick-ups digging holes and not covering them back up in Parks in the area from as far as I know of right now from Kindred to Dickey areas. If the person's that did this stupid act read this, you are going to bring the downfall of detecting one of these days. It will end up being against the law and then Metal Detecting will be gone and that will tick a lot of people of that love this hobby. If you are reading this, you better start covering your holes and removing the larger items you dig because if I come across you and you are leaving holes open and throwing junk on top of the ground like copper pipe and other large objects, you won't have to worry about detecting anymore because you won't have a detector to hunt with. I will smash it right in front of you and then what happens after that will depend on the characters judgement. I love this hobby and you should too, but if you continue doing what you are doing, there isn't going to be this Forum or Hobby at all. Sorry if I affend anyone but this is the 2nd time I have run into someone and heard about this act of stupidity and it is getting really old. The town of Kindred, N.D. has recently passed an ordinance that there be no digging in the park anymore but you still can pick up the surface items but digging is prohibited. Now that I have mentioned that, I also found the usual clad which consisted of 1 Clad Kennedy Half, 6 Quarters, 15 Dimes, 2 Nickels, and 48 Pennies. I hope I don't get banned due to this post but this must be heard and I just hope that people that are out there can get the word out and if anyone see's anybody not doing the right thing, to just give some advice and tell them what is going to happen and hopefully this will get rid of some of the people out there that are not educated in the proper ways of metal detecting and item recovery. Just trying to look out for everyone here on this forum and would hate to see anything happen to it. As always fella's, Good Luck and HH:shrug::thumbup: Token is Good For 5c In Trade / C.L. Carpenter Dickey, N.D.[attachment 33539 TokenFront.jpg][attachment 33540 TokenBack.jpg][attachment 33541 Ring.jpg][attachment 33542 BrokenArmcup.jpg]

I did go back to that yard and I found 2 older Jefferson Nickels and a 36 Buffalo Nickel right where you had found your Indian and Merc. I also found that Token on the north side of the house where I had found my Merc. and also another Wheatie. I went across the street and tried the Park and I got the 2 Rosie's, an Indian, and a older Jefferson and the '15 Buffalo. Also found that Ring there. More stuff in both locations. I didn't go and ask again but the guy was over there digging with a Skidsteer so maybe in a few weeks I will go back down there and see if I can't detect at least the boulevard area. I also have mentioned about what happened in Dickey Park when we were detecting there to try and get the word out a bit. Hope I don't get banned or anything since this is a great Forum and I would hate to not be able to post anything here anymore. Like a second home of sorts. Good to hear from you and Good Luck and HH this month.

Hope to hook up with you as well soon before winter sets in. I guess Jeff didn't find anything at Grand Rapids in the river but he either wasn't in the right spot or he didn't have an Excalibur. You will have to give it a shot next spring if possible. Good Luck and HH.

Of course I dig Junk. There isn't a soul out there that doesn't and if they say they don't, well then they are on Fantasy Island. It is very seldom I get skunked but it has happened. It sure is an awful feeling to get and I try my best to find what I do so I don't have that horrible feeling. Some of the old country Schools have been hit so you got lucky and found one that produced for you. And if you found a Wheatie in the Park, then there should be a few more good finds left to be found. So give it more time and patience and you just might find some nice Silver also. I am also looking forward to meeting you on Sunday and I hope Rick is also able to show up since his wife has been wanting to get out and do some detecting also. I will see you there on Sunday and thanks for the post. Good Luck and HH.:detecting::thumbup:

Of course, I really knew that you dig junk.

Hey, thanks for that rant and warning to the poor performance diggers. They certainly give metal detecting a bad name. There were some young people at the park Saturday with a new Garrett, who were not doing a very good job of digging discretely and not covering their holes well. I spent a little time with them on the importance of it, and showed them how to do a better job.

Thanks again for the rant and the reply.

Here are some items I found recently which do not qualify for WTG, but are a little interesting.

What year is on that Dog Tax Tag of yours? Also, is that pocket watch back made out of silver because it sure appears to look like it from here. I see you found someone's one-hitter. I bet they dearly miss it because to some, it is like breathing without oxygen. I also like the arrow you found. Not great finds but they do tell a story and are interesting none the less.

The watch gave a solid 31 Cond and 00 Fer signal. Does that tell you anything?

I'm not familiar with the "one-hitter." What is it?

The Broadpoint was found buried in the forest floor in my back yard. There are many deer hunting tree stands in the my 20 acres of trees.

The One-Hitter is what teens and adults use for smaking POT. If you find any older Dog Tax Tags, they are worth money. Run the back of the pocket watch to see what it gives for a reading and is there any markings that say STERLING on the inside or outside?

thanks again, James. You are an encyclopedia.

Wow, could I be arrested for having a "one-hitter?"

I couldn't find written indication of silver on the watch. Running the detector over the back cover gave different signals; 26 and 5 inside up and 28 and 5 outside up. (the conductivity numbers are 26 and 2:geek:.

And now: Good night.

Just make sure the one hitter has no residue in it from what I was told by the local Sheriff deputy when I showed him those i find. One of the Deputy's even bought as new detector after showing him my finds and have another one thinking on one.

I believe the watch back is a plated copper or brass from the reading you get.

Rick

I don't think the person or persons doing this reads these forums, but if they do they have been warned.
I heard there was a couple of guys that been detecting since back in the 70s that use shovels and been told not to come back to 2 parks in Fargo. Run into another guy that uses a Sampson relic shovel too in parks and told him he shouldn't use something like that in parks.
Was at a park in West Fargo to do a field test on a Compass coin and relic Scanner a few years ago and seen holes all over the place from another guy and while covering up the holes was told this park is now off limit to detectors.
I think some of these are people buying detectors from discount stores and never been showed how to use them.
I hope we can catch some of these people before it is too late.

Rick

I believe they have some big doings there on Sunday, so the parks and fairgrounds may be busy on Sunday. Did you hear anything about Potato days?

It was only listed for Friday and Saturday so I think it is clear for Sunday. I am still going to go down to Barnesville anyways and if there is stuff going on, then I will have a different spot picked out to hunt at. Hope to see you there Rick and I will see you tonight since I had a lot of things to do last night and that is why I didn't make it.

What, no barbers or seated?............:) Nice collection you have there James. Nice buffs and I see you may have used some nick a date on the one. I like buffs and it's been quite a while since I have found one. Good looking injun also........:) Way to go my friend. HH.
