I found this the other day while digging in a yankee calvary camp. I seriously doubt it's period, made of stainless steel. I'm not sure but I suspect it is horse related. Sucker was 10 inches deep.

Inside your western or english riding boots,there are a couple of tabs. This item [plus another one for the other side of the boot] is put through the tab and then you use it to help you pull the boot on.
