I have 2 basic questions and an observation. Any response will be appreceated.
In any mode, the deepest my XS will air detect a quarter, penny, etc, is approx 6 inches. I have located beer cans at approx a foot in soil. Does this sound right? How deep is deep when folks refer to deep as it relates to the explorer?

Lay the quarter on the ground and go over it with the coil. The explorer is not an air compatable machine. It uses the matrix of the ground. You won't be finding to many coins in the air. <IMG SRC="/forums/images/smile.gif" BORDER=0 ALT=":)"> I have a barber dime at 11.5" very faint but repeatable. Deepest silver dime I have ever found.

Thanks for the reply, when I said air detecting, I ment that the coins were on the grounds surface.
My iron setting is at -6
 
if your only getting a quarter qt 6 inches in air test with the quarter on top of the ground somethings wrong.. I can get them at 10 inches easy with manual sens as low as 22... deepest coin I have dug was a large cent at an easy 14 inches with the 10 inch coil in clean ground, most coins I get are in the 6-7 inch range but I know it will get em deeper if they are there... iron can affect the depth you get though.. and I am very happy when I pull a coin out at 6 or 7 inches in extreme iron, which is about the limit it seems with the 8 inch coil, and the 10 wont get that deep in that type site, but most machines wont see them deeper than 2 inches at these sites.... a few nails wont hurt the bigger coils but you get into the orange rusted ground and you know your in iron <IMG SRC="/forums/images/smile.gif" BORDER=0 ALT=":)">
 
Is it possibly to get a coil that will not go as deep as the claims. By this I mean could it be defective( not wrapped wright etc) I buried a couple of coins in the yard at 6 and 10" almost a year ago and would never find them without being marked and it is still hard to find. I just got the sunray 8 and the depth seems as good if not better Does anyone else seem to have this problem.
 
On Coins that you have burried?? Yes i do find this is true, but in accual hunting conditions I find you will get deeper. One thing if you are looking for depth I would run iron mask at a -9 or more as it does make a difference on depth.
I have seen where a coin on top of the ground is hard to get in certien areas if you run any disc pattern as the ground below the coin has either something that will effect the reading in disc and in iron mask at a -9 or more it dont effect it as much.
Next time you are out and find a area where it nulls lay down a dime on the ground and see how well you get a signal and then go to iron mask at a -9 or so and see what difference it makes.
