Found this at an old homesite (Mid 1800's)where the house was torn down and the area bulldozed. I may be holding it in the wrong position. Looks sorta like a candle holder or candle snuffer,have no idea. Looks to be made of brass or copper. Any info appreciated!!
 
...have the open vents in the side. Maybe part of an incense burner, something like this? <img src="/metal/html/shrug.gif" border=0 width=37 height=15 alt=":shrug">
 
I would say it is some type of a candle holder. I think you are holding upside down. Since it is decorative, I would image that they would not have such a rough peen job on the top of whatever it is.......Aaron
 
Perhaps a bell that once hung above a door. When the door opened it rang the bell.
Just a guess.
