This was about 10 inches deep in an early 1800's site. You have to look at it sideways due to the size(about the size of a baseball). It has 2 small crude holes at the top where nails probably fastened it to something. The picture appears to be a man fishing with his dog. The plate is copper and has turned green like an indian. Not worth a hoot but gosh I love this hobby. What an interesting piece.

Thank you much Jim from upstate NY. One of these days maybe we can hook up and find some good stuff. If you ever get close to Lexington, KY look me up and I'll take you to my favorite places.

Jim knows waaaay more about that stuff than I do. But I just wanted to add that I think it is a civilian commercial flask and nothing military because of the hunting scene with the dog. That may have been painfully obvious but thought I would still mention it.
I do love finding neat stuff like that. That thing was much more important to the person that owned it than any coin.

Joe,put a google search for --gun powder or black powder flasks. some of them bring big bucks

Couldn't agree more - it makes the hobby just that much greater when some wierd thingy pops up - it has taken me 10 years to identify some of these things and the forum is invaluable. Thanks.
