What is PI?

I'm new to metal detecting. I bought a White's XLT for Christmas. Treated myself. What does PI mean? What is my XLT? How can I learn more about what makes metal detectors different and how this effects performance? Any advice or direction on where I can look to research different types of detectors and the different ways they work would be appreciated.
Thanks,
HH Mike

Your XLT is VLF(Very Low Frequency) ands it's detection method is based on phase shift of the recieved signal. PI stands for Pulse Induction. Pulse Induction type metal detectors use a time based method of metal detection. In VLF type detectors the transmitter is always on. In a PI detector the transmitter and reciever are switched on and off opposite to one another so that the transmitter and reciever are not on at the same time. These are very simplified explanations. The best place I can think of to learn more about the diofferent types of detectors would be to go to your local dealer and see if he carries any of Charles Garrett's Books. He wrote adn excellent book on metal detecting and the different types of detectors available. It's definitely slated toward Garrett Detectors but gives very good explanations of teh different methods of detection as well as the advantages and disadvantages involved with the different methods. If your local dealer doesn't carry it you might do an Internet search for "Rielly's Tresured Gold" . He has a very good selection of books pertaining to our hobby and probably has the book I am speaking of. Good Luck this is a great hobby!!!
