What is this rock? Seems to be very heavy and looks like...

It might have been the outside layer of something else. Inside seems to have bubbles but the outside seems to have bubbles and a much smoother outside. Probably not a meteor but if you were unskilled at this which I am... You'd think it was the outside layer that blew apart... Found in a field with Keith... but forgot about it till I went to clean out my bag..

I looks like it could be a meteorite it will be
magnetic If it is metalic. There is usualy a blackish
crust that forms as the meteor heats up coming
thru the atmosphere. only the surface heats though
so the inside should look like rock and iron mixed
together or just iron/ nickle. the only way to tell for shure is to send a piece to a scientific lab
for confermation. if you found it in a field
and it meets all the criteria send out a piece
to get checked would be a really cool find.
I have looked many times for one but no luck yet.
 
Looks like the hunks of slag I used to find around old iron forges. Also looks similar to some iron ores like Hematite, but I don't know much about rocks. If it didn't ooze out a glowing green substance that took over your body, then it probably isn't a meteorite <img src="/metal/html/wink.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=";)"> Take care and HH, Mike.
PS... did you get that battery sent yet???
 
There are a lot of rocks in that field that sound like silver (only different) and lock in the top right corner like a quarter. Was this one of thise hits?
 
I found a "tektite" once. That's the rock that blows into the stratousphere, when a large meteor hits the planet. It was cylinder shaped, black and looked like glass or clear quartz crystal. It was heavy, as well, but didn't read on the detector.

This is one of the largest collections of meteorites in the world. You can look at the meteorites basics and learn a bit about the rocks.

Looks like the slag from Briarfield Iron Works in Alabama (Bibb Furnace). The Rail Road tracks are covered with slag down there. I believe it to be the residue from producing iron ore into iron metal. Minerals, sand and debris make up its matrix. Good hunting, David @ Dixie
