Found near Louisiana campsite along with a few other things including 2 dropped bullets.
Solid brass, 4-3/4" long, threaded on end, nail or screw hole on one side of threaded end, bird with snake in mouth wrapped around head.
Anyone have any info on this one?

...quite a few interesting hits by searching for "heron" or "stork" and "snake". Seems to be a fairly popular motif, maybe in part to the Aesop's Fable the farmer and the stork.
I've seen some references to an antique brass candlestick with a stork eating a snake, but no pics that match so far. Neat find.

Thank you all, for the great information in your reply's. I have added details on where this item was found.
<img src="/metal/html/biggrin.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":D"> The site where this piece was found is a known skirmish site where many Union and Confederate items have been found, this past week I returned to the site and found a US rosette in great shape.
Sugar cane was planted in this field for the first time three years ago, this field will only be deep plowed for replanting every 4 years, however light plowing is done each year when the sugarcane is harvested, this light plowing has turned over some nice finds this year: US Oval belt plate w/puppy feet in great shape, gun parts, bullets and many iron relics.
