My son -in-law found this while we were out in the NV desert. It is 8 inches long and 1 1/2 inc diameter. The body is aluminum and the "wings" are stainless steel. It has a slight burnt smell. It is hollow until the end with holes. No markings at all on it. There is a military test range nearby. I think it is form an errant rocket. Any thoughts? Guesses? Aliens?

BE CAREFULL WITH THIS THING!!!

From the info I have gathered from the net, this is something you don't want to be messing with/handling (too late on both parts). It's an inner segment of a nutronium calibration hyper detonation segment of a test rocket ment to be used for setting off plasma devices!!! They can be radio active, can still have potential for explosive properties and other than that, a good collector item for what ever the he## it is........ehehehe.....

I'd say it's part of a rocket, perhaps the type launched from fighter planes. How close to Nellis were you?

Doing fine Bill thanks. Just been busy with my "new" motorcycle and enjoying the ride (4k in 4 months so far). My bro says I should take the feller with me. I would that means I would have to stop someplace....ehehee. I'll get back into it. New toys need attention. .......

Happy hunting everyone,
Rosco

I was a few hours east of Reno. On another forum a guy posted a pic of one he found in Victoria. Here is what he posted.

Hmm these things must be universal, I found one in an area in the Central Highlands of Victoria which had been used by the army for maneuvers. My son who is ex Army informed me that It is known as a "sub-munition" and is used in training in place of a full sized round, cheaper and not as dangerous.

A few hours east of Reno is a few minutes away by F-16. The explanation is plausible but what kind of round. Still an interesting find.

Well I got this one solved with help form some folks on another site. Here is the final info that was posted.

1.
Mines 35mm diameter, not sure what calibre that would be. No armoured vehicles or choppers practice in my area so assume it is shoulder fired.

2.
Yes, it is a rocket, a parachute flare type of rocket. held in a tube of same material, take top off, insert flare, bottom down, into top of flare container. slap the bottom with hand...wooosh. flare floats down on a small white parachute.
Overall length, before firing, is about 13 inch's. great infantry toys.

Reminds me of when we were kids. We used to find those weather sending units attached to a parachute or what was left of a balloon, don't remember now which one, in the hills and fields above where we lived. The wind was just right our direction and the weather station data collection units would end up in our hands. Have no idea what happened to the ones we found........

Your find was explosive!!!! That's cool..........:yikes:

May the electons be with you in your hunting.....
