OK fellows, I don't know what the heck is going on:veryangry: I sent my XS into Minelab because it was acting up over a week ago and haven't heard anything back from them yet as to what might be causing the problems that I was having. The darn thing would turn on and off by itself and that ain't all. Sometimes when I sat my machine down on the ground to dig my target it would change from the smart or digital screen that I was using and change to the edit or the learn screen all by itself and sometimes it would even do a noise cancel. I borrowed one of my detecting buddies XS's and I'll be darn if his isn't doing the same darn things!!!! I was cooking dinner tonight, heard this noise by the back door and I'll be damn as this thing just turned on all by itself and then it went to the factory preset settings. Either I must be a jinx to Minelab XS's or some detecting demon is messing with me:devil: Seems kind of weird that the same darn issues are happening with two identical machines. The only thing I'm doing is using my own battery packs, headphones and my lower shaft with the X-1 probe and the SE Pro coil. Has anyone else experienced these kind of problems? Do you think it could be my battery packs or something else? I'm really scratching my head on this one and any help from anyone would be appreciated. Like I said, I haven't heard anything back from Minelab in Las Vegas yet and if it comes back that they couldn't find anything wrong with it then I will have to do a process of elimination to figure it out. Hmmm, Eddie, I questioned your battery pack on your last post about your XS. Well, actually, I thought it might be either your springs in the battery pack compartment of your XS or your dirty terminals of your pack. But I don't think any of this could cause the machine to turn on by itself....That's really strange..:nerd:.....the only way it could turn on by itself is if the power button is faulty or sticking internally..

Sorry to hear about this, as I know you said you don't have another spare to go out detecting with.

Naw!! Eddie lives in Poulsbo and that's just a stone's throw from the Trident Nuclear Submarine base. The subs are raising all kinds of heck with electronic things. The good part of all this is it keeps Eddie out of the field and then many of us have a chance to find some goodies again. The pins in the toy XS is working!!

I just had to do that Eddie. The battery is still highly suspect. It could still catch a vibration from somewhere while standing in a corner and move an intermittent connection and cause it to power up.
 
Detector and causing all these problems for you. No, it's just the board is malfunctioning throwing switches are random, just like a computer may do, and they do, do it also. You should have tried a hard reset, by removing the battery when it was on, replacing the battery, and factory reset again, and scan channels for the best channel. But, don't leave the possibility that someone is hacking into your machine from a short distance and playing around with your electronic options on your detector, anything is possible in today's electronics.

Good Luck with MineLab, and remember beach season is coming up and many machine are in for tune ups and repairs, you'll be better not getting excited and not saying harsh words when you call to find out the status, as it will only cause problems... Be patient, and let MineLab correct the problem right so you won't have anymore problems, my guess, your main board will be changed as its switches are amidst...

I figured that I would get a razz out of you about this Jim. Not to worry as the border guards will keep you out of my hunting areas.:rofl: Seriously though, I have cleaned all of my battery terminals and made sure I had fresh batteries so I'm guessing it could be a bad power button or some other internal electrical problem. Seems funny though that the XS that my buddy let me borrow is doing the same things and he said that it was working fine the last time he used it.Oh and by the way, I have a good friend who is a capt on one of the Trident subs and I know where you live.:blowup: HH.

I know you commented on my first post about it being a sticky power button Dan, but I think you missed what I said about me borrowing another XS from one of my buddies and now his is doing the same things that mine was doing. Call it a coincidence or whatever, but maybe after being so many years old some power buttons do go bad. Guess I will find out the story when Minelab calls me and tells me what the damages are. HH.

What you said about the board malfunctioning makes sense and like I told Dan, I'll find out for sure when Minelab calls me back. Trying a hard reset is about the only thing that I didn't try so I might give this a try and see if it will make any difference on my borrowed XS. I always do a noise cancel before I start detecting and sometimes I will do it again if I move to a different spot or start getting some interference. I won't be giving Minelab any harsh words as I know that they are backlogged on doing repairs and I was told that there is about a 30 working day wait on turn arounds. I was told that they will try and expedite it for me so we'll see. HH.

Good jab back! Please tell your captain friend to not target my area. Me thinks if he does with the weapons he has onboard, we'll both be toast.

You have something to use during the interim? I'd be willing to meet someplace half way and let you borrow the E-Track for a couple of weeks. That would get you at least 2 weeks less time without a machine. I'm trying to hit the water really hard so I wouldn't miss it for awhile. Much longer than two weeks I'd probably start getting withdrawl symptoms.

That master reset sounds like something worth trying. However if it's already on the way to ML it'd be pretty hard to pull off. Take care...jim

If you are still using the same battery pack from the XS you sent it I would highly suspect it is bad even though you cleaned it and put differnt batteires in it. I seen this on a XS I sold to a guy when the XS came out and his would shut down and change from digital to smart find also. It came down to switching my pack for his and his worked good and mine would act up so I put a new pack in his and been fine ever since. Figured there must have been a bad connection in the pack somewhere causing it that we couldnt see.
 
I think you could be right about a bad battery pack as my buddies XS that I borrowed started doing the same weird things. I sent a email to Metal Detector Depot asking if they had any battery packs, but I guess they don't check their emails. Do you have any AA battery holders for sale? You can send me a PM or regular email as I think you have my home email address. Thanks for the info on your buddies XS that was acting up like mine is.

Thanks for the offer of letting me borrow your E-Trac, but I do have a borrowred XS that a buddy let me use while mine is in the hospital. My only problem now is from what Rick(ND) told me is that I might have a bad battery pack or more and it will now be a process of elimination trying to find the bad pack. How is the beach hunting going for you? HH.

Eddie...jump over to the beach and water section and you'll see a couple of posts about some of the problems I've been having. Got a scoop from a fellow who makes them in the Ukraine. I really like it but getting a handle into it has caused some problems. Just minor stuff. But I gotta fix it before I can spend too much time in the water.
I guess water hunting is like land hunting. Some days your hot and some days your not. I just like water, always have, and it's plain relaxing to wade or dive and just be looking for goodies. When I wade there's a couple of times I'll get questions from somebody on shore but that never happens when I am diving. When diving, unless I take somebody diving with me, I never see another metal detector working around me. Glad you have an XS to use. Problem is, now you'll get back out and loot all the countryside. If I see you hunting somewhere, I'm going at least 100 miles another direction. That is if I want to find anything except recent clad. jim
 
the battery pack also. I bet either a bad soldering job is at fault in the pack or one of the springs or flat plates inside has lost it's tension making a looser fit to the batteries. Hope that's the problem for you and it doesn't cost an arm and a leg to repair your XS. Hope you get out this weekend and solve the problem with your friends detector acting up also. mine was doing something similar. it would shut off and then a couple times it went back to the first start up segment. i keep restarting then i noticed that the battery cap was loose. yours sounds a lot more complicated, good luck.
 
I'll check out the water hunting site Jim. I sold my water machine. Only used it a couple of times as I prefer detcting on land. Yes, I do have a borrowed XS, but now I'm having the same problems with his. Got three battery packs and there is no way in heck that all of a sudden all three are bad. HH.

I sent Rick a PM about what's been going on. I have three battery packs and what are the chances of all three going bad on me at the same time? I'm hoping that it's something in the electronic housing on my XS that's causing the problems, but it's in the hands of Minelab now. Three bad battery packs seems unlikely, but it's really weird that my loner XS is acting up now also. Time will tell I guess. HH.

most likely the springs inside the machine with a faulty solder connection or weak spring itself. Hope everything runs smooth when you get it back Eddie. Good Luck and HH.
