What would be the advantage of this coil?

Hey Jack, I think the reason is to cover a good swath of ground but narrow so you get better seperation. I myself wish I had a DD coil for my X-terra 70 since its what I have had since I started detecting. They miss less as far as I can tell, less overlap. Hope this helps you out, HH L8R

With that hi freq. DD what kind of depth can a guy believe he will get at the factory presets (16 on the sensitivity). I'm also curious as to whether the stock CC will work decent up north in the gold fields (eastern Washington st). My theory is that the medium freq. CC will ignore some of the fines and pick up starting with the smaller nuggets.
 
A higher frequency DD coil would be a better coil for two reasons....... one is that the DD design performs better in that highly mineralized soil. And the second is because the higher frequency responds better to the lower conductive targets, such as gold. Depth???? Tough to say without being able to swing the coil up there. Is 16 as high as you can go on the sensitivity without overloading the signal and having it bounce back? How mineralized is the site? On average, I'd estimate it will get about the same depth as the 6-inch DD at the same frequency. But, the elliptical will obviously cover more soil with each swath. On the other hand, it is possible that the larger footprint of the elliptical may require a lower sensitivity than even the 6-inch DD at 18.75. (analyzing more mineralization at any point in time) So would the Sensitivity on the elliptical have to be lowered to a point that the 6-inch would actually hunt deeper? Again, too many variables to make a definitive response. Coils for the detectorist are like wrenches for the mechanic. You can use a pair of pliars or a crecent wrench to tighten a bolt. But a set of sockets will likely do a better job. Sorry I couldn't help more. JMHO HH Randy
 
Sorry for hijacking your topic Jack, However I,m hoping my questions helped! Randy I chose 16 on the sens just to have a reference. An air test shows that my HF DD will hit 5 oz of silver and 6 wheats at a wopping 3 inches. This is sitting on the ground and using a wooden school ruler to check with. Now the distance will increase as I up the sens, now this is in my back yard in a clean area and I,m starting to chatter at about 26 on the sensitivity. When I swap to the MF CC stock coil my depth improves a couple of inches and I start to chatter around 23. Please keep in mind I'm new to all of this so there is still much for me to learn. I do work in a very tech savy shop and these detecter controls are fairly easy to navigate and I'm a quick study (i'm a machinist 20+ years CNC and conventional).

So off I go to TRY to get access to an old home stead that appears to also have had a store on the sight. Practice Practice Practice (and ask lots of questions).

although you consider it an "air test" by laying the targets on the ground, having the proper ground balance setting is an important factor. The coil is, afterall, having to analyze the ground matrix under those targets. That is the first thing that comes to mind with those three inch target depths.

Regardless of the coil, you should hit 5 ounces of silver at depths exceeding 10 inches. Another factor could be the noise channel you are operating on. And lastly........I know the stock coil is 9-inch concentric at 7.5 kHz. But which high freq DD coil are we comparing it to? There is the 6-inch DD, elliptical DD and 10.5-inch DD, all at 18.75 kHz. With a bit more information, we may be able to help figure this out for you. HH Randy

P.S. If I hadn't mentioned it before, the procedure I suggest for those somewhat new to the X-Terra, is (briefly) .....turn on the detector, all metal mode, hold coil horizontal at waist level, properly set the NC, lower the sensitivity to single digit, set the threshold to a level that is just barely audible, properly set the GB and then raise the sensitivity back up as high as you can go (when sweeping over clean ground) without unbearable chatter. You can hunt with whatever level of discrimination you want. But I always suggest setting up the detector in the all metal mode. And until you can differentiate the threshold tone from the fluctuating GB tones, increase the sensitivity after you set the proper GB.
 
I did GB in all metal, I forgot to noise cancel, and I havent quite figured out the Threshhold yet (I know it is important though). The 5 x 10 DD is the only other coil I have right now.

Hmmm... I wonder, I did have another wierd thing with this machine. I would pinpoint then set the machine down and pick up a hum similar to a harmonic feedback loop, even if I set down in a clean spot, and that did not go away even when I lifted to 6 feet off the ground. This happened at three different locations My dealer told me to turn off pinpoint before setting down, and I have also had to turn down the sensitivity at that home site and change noise channels several times to find the one that worked best (after setting it in auto). He attributed it to EM interference.

I'm going to go back to the FAQ FAQ and read some more, right after I go do some more tests following your procedure.

I ran again with the 5x10 DD only and got 6 to 7 inches solid and real real faint at close to 8 inches. I did just what you said this seems to be much better. my sens is up to 22 maybe could go another point or two thresh is at 11 and I can just hear it (without headphones). Does this sound better If not I will have get into contact with the local club and seek help.

Hope I dont need to send it into Minelab for testing (new machine with about 20 hours on it)

I will run more tests tomorow or later but I may need to go into work for the afternoon. Extra hours are a good thing sometimes, even if they cut into TH time.

I took up treasure hunting because I needed a new hobby and have 4 days off to play (mon tues wed and thurs) HA HA!

Thats normal air test depths.Mine at maxed sens (30)will hit siver half at 11 and dime at 10.

I'm getting a lot out of this thread. Conversation/posting like this is great and let's other members know how things should be with their machine. I've got 2 more coils to get, the 5X10 DD and the CC 18.75 and I'll have all of them for the XTerras. I'm gonna look for them shortly (used). I'm amazed at just being able to hunt in one frequency and then go back over it with a totally different coil and pick up more each time. It's a training lesson for sure or rather an education. I can hunt so fast with the X's that it makes for a fun hunt and the anticipatiopn of picking something else up is like icing on the cake. I did just recently realize that I was hunting too slow. When I swing it "good fashion" (that's southern for rather fast):lol: I seems to hit more targets even while covering the ground at the same rate or walk lets say. I like the comment about the 5X10 that it is light as a feather. I can't wait to get one and try it out. There are several places that I've hunted with one or two coils and I've written them down as to pick a different coil on the next trip to see what else just might be hiding in the dirt. However I am getting addicted to that space ship looking 7.5 khz DD hovering through the grass pulling stuff from the earth. I keep waiting for it to land and Dr. Smith and Will and Penny and the robot to get out. That 7.5 DD has been deadly for me lately.
 
Jeff with headphones you will be able to lower the threshold to around 3 which will imrove depth and sensitivity. :thumbup:

Jack, I use the 5x10 18.75 DD when there is only low to moderate trash and I am still hoping to find very small targets. It will find 177 airgun pellets, 22 slugs, 22 short brass and bird shot. I have found all of these and feel that if I went over a nugget or small piece of jewelry, I would find it. I found 1 tiny cheap glass pendant at Frankston Beach, AU this spring. If it gets more trashy or the mineralization gets too high I switch to the 6" DD at 18.75kHz. It will actually go slightly deeper in my experience and is excellent at pinpointing but doesn't cover ground rapidly. The 5x10 is not as good at pinpointing as the 6". Hope this helps and HH.
 
Man I misunderstood that part of the lesson at purchase. I hunted an old house here and have pulled about 75 coins.Three trips totaling 5 hours, mostly pennies with the best coin being a 1956 wheat. and most fairly shallow. I will have to go back, the house was built in the thirties single family residence.

I will have to contact the local treasure club to find some one to hunt with mid week. Training is good.

I did not use the head phones today for my tests but I started hunting with them my second trip out with the x705. I don't use my bounty hunter at all now. course i only used it two weeks before decicing to upgrade and two more untill the 705 I'l keep it though It does find coins and i have kids.
 
Yes, and...

Our resident audio expert "claims" that maxing the headphone volume and using the detector volume control to adjust the sound to a comfortable level is best. Still, some users will set the detectors volume to max and adjust the headphone accordingly. Who cares about battery life right. :poke:

Either way, if the sound is too loud on shallow targets you ears will wear out quickly. Human hearing will adjust to soft sounds but too loud of a setting causes fatigue.

Here is my preferred setup method for voume and threshold:

Place a coin on the ground and starting with the volume turned way down, sweep the coil about 6" over the coin while increasing the volume until the audio signal is distinct and at a comfortable non tiring level. It is important to start at a low level and adjust by increasing the volume rather than starting out at a high level and decreasing the volume. You will arrive at a lower setting this way and you ears will thank you. After the volume is set adjust the threshold until you just barely hear a steady hum in the headphones. Some, like the aforementioned audio expert will even adjust the threshold slightly lower until it just becomes quiet.

Whichever way you decide to set the threshold, never run it above a low barely audible hum.
