What would be the symptoms of a potentially defective Explorer SE?

I ask this because today I was on the beach MD and I definitely discriminated against nails and thats all I got WAS nails?!

Perhaps you had accepted nails and rejected everything else rather than rejecting nails? Check to see if you have an "X" or a check mark. What tones did you have ferrour or conductive? If you had ferrous sounds, you would "hear" if you were hunting for nails by accident.

I double checked just half hour ago. I had everything checked except nails & crown caps and they were X'd out. I was using Ferrous by the way. So you mean to tell me that even though I shut nails off ferrous still sounds it?? I would think the sound would just go blank?

hmm, maybe you're right OR their iron content was low. I do recall a low ferrous readin, can't recall what it was but when I go there again this Sunday I make a note of it to try again and see what's up

You should have held on to them for a while - I usually keep my junk for a while in case I need to rescan them or recheck them in any way - even if you disc'ed out nails, it won't mask ALL nails - nails are notorious for fooling the Explorer anyway even with a high Iron Mask setting. If you still had the nails you could rescan them to confirm where they hit. Most likely your Explorer is working just fine.

I may have been a little unclear, but I meant, if you did not discriminate out nails and you had conductive tones nails would sound high and "good", however, if you are running ferrous sounds, and accidentily did not discriminate outnails, then you would hear it. Meaning nails have a very low grunting sound.

That being said, if you were digging nails, and you were discriminating them out, and you had ferrous sounds and you were getting a high "good" signal, you may be a victim of "falsing".

Iron objects, especially nails, or bent nails with throw off a signal that may fake out the detector.

Next time you go out and get a repeatable signal, rotate your position 90 degrees and cross over the spot again. Do you still get the signal? If not, it may be iron falsing.

If it repeats, how does it sound? Coins sound like a bicycle bell, pure and sweet, and sort of drawn out. A good strong signal will not have any distortion. Nails or iron content will sort of cut off short or sound "scratchy". They won't sound like a smooth/round object. Crazy to say that, but after a while you can tell.

Also, if you keep getting a repeatable signal, but when you go to pinpoint, it seems the metal item is off to one side of where you thought it would be, it is most likely iron falsing. The iron will project a good signal away from it, in detect mode you will "pinpoint" that projected signal. However when you switch to pinpoint mode, the detector will lock on to the iron off to one side, the source of the signal. Check the smart find screen or the digital read out when pinpointing, it'll be more accurate.

I hope I'm not coming off insulting with my advice, I took a look at when you registered and the number of posts and I feel you are at a similar stage in your metal detecting career as I am. Fairly new. Most of what I posted above isn't exactly "learned" during the course of my metal detecting career but a compilation of many forum searches and posts I found while trying to figure out my Explorer. This is everything I would have loved to read on one post when I first got started.

I still consider myself fairly new at it, but I'm at a point where I am gaining confidence in digging those "iffy" signals, a skill only time digging nails and other "nuts" will allow you to do. For now, if you are indeed fairly new to the explorer, I would recommend sticking to the above.

Also, another thing I found useful was to hit some "gravy" spots and dig up lots of clad. Hit beaches, volleyball courts, perhaps some high traffic tot lots. Even if this isn't a type of detecting you plan to do, it will get you lots of time hearing "good" signals. I personally preferred this method rather than throwing various coins on the ground and trying to get used to what they sound like, boring! (if you don't already hunt with 10 variability, I strongly recommend you do so) Hitting the gravy spots, switching to the digital read out and listening to the sound, I always guess what I think I'm digging up, I've become very accurate. I wasted a lot of time trying to start off and learn at a high trash site when I started.

Lastly, if you are searching for a webpage on how to use the Explorer SE, go to the below site. I basically printed out every page and have read it multiple times. Every time a month goes by I re-read it, and start using the more advance tips. I really love it. It's made by a guy I've seen posting on various forums Charles (Upstate NY), he knows his stuff.

Funny, I'm 46 too and never heard of that guy - I have heard of King Kong and Godzilla, but never really got into those movies as a kid - I think I liked cartoons more Now I really like Westerns. BTW, where r u located?

Then of course Clint Eastwood's Sphagehetti Westerns are on the top of ya list. In my opinion they are the best ever made westerns and they have not been topped yet. They were made over 40 years ago
