What would you do ?

HI, :)

I know 2 guys who have been detecting with each other weekly for a couple of years :twodetecting:
They have always had their secret spots and had an agreement that each guy would not detect at those special spots without the other guy
.....also that they would not tell anyone else or take anyone else to them.
One guy is always going away on trips and on return always asks the other guy " now, have you been detecting at any of our special spots ?"
The guy left behind always kept his word and had not gone there and told him so each time.

What has happened is that the guy who always goes away and upon return quizzes the other guy - just up and went to one of their spots without his friend.
The other poor guy is flabbergasted  that he could do this and is quite peeved off .:ranting:

Due to this he has stopped detecting with his long time detecting partner and is going solo or with other people

The guy who went to one of their alone says : gee...sorry,sorry - its not that big a deal to break up a good detecting partnership is it ?

What would be your reaction ??
thanks :)

Send him to North Qld, people who do the dirty like that dont last to long.He has no idea what mateship is about.

It sounds like both guys are adults so I'd like to think that they would be able to sit down and at least have a conversations about what has happened. If they can't come to some kind of an agreement or they think things are patched up and it happens again then the honest guy needs to do his own thing and forget about the dishonest guy.

There are a lot of ways that you can look at detecting with other people. I think if you are out and find a place that you want to detect without your detecting partner then that's up to you. I know my brother (hotrod53) is often working a decent distance from the area where we all live so if he finds a good detecting spot we can't expect him to wait and go back with all of us especially if he has his detector in the car when he finds the place. Another situation may be that one of us asks to detect a home site where someone is still living. If the person that owns the home site agrees but is a little hesitant it may not be a good idea for all three of us to show up on the site.

It's pretty ironic what's happened on some of our outings as far as who's idea it was to goto a location and who had the biggest finds for the day. We had a place that our uncle took us to and Hotrod53 found 3 indians and a seated dime and our mother found a few indians but myself and our uncle pretty much came up empty handed. Hotrod53 took us to an old site and I found an indian and a silver quarter and he and our mom didn't do quite as well. We took our mother to a site and she found a huge 10K gold ring and Hotrod53 and I didn't find too much. When you think about it we all have the same detector and pretty much the same chance at finding something. In these cases if the person who had the idea went by themselves and all things equal, that person may have missed something really good anyway. So does it pay to not take your detecting partner to a site that you find? In these cases that I just mentioned, the person that had the idea didn't do as well as the other people. I'd like to think that the person that did well appreciates the person that took them there and who doesn't like to be appreciated. I think in our little group we pride ourself in being able to strip a site of anything of value regardless of who finds what so when we all go together it's more fun than going alone.

Actually for the last few years my brother has a place picked out that he would love to detect and based on it's history, it could be a lucrative location. I drive past it very often but I won't detect it because it was his idea. It's not a very big spot so if he wants to do it alone or with us then that's his choice because it was his idea. Not a very difficult decision to hold off from detecting this spot unless you're just plain ignorant.

Since the other fellow broke the agreement and went there alone I would do the same thing but not necessarily end the relationship. I would go there alone and detect anytime I wanted to.

This is part of why I like to detect alone.I do my own research, I get the permission, I detect the property/properties and if I want someone else to know about it, I tell them and he/she is under no obligation to return the favor.I already have a wife to argue with over such trivial things :laugh:I say "man up" to both of them:rolleyes: and just have fun.

Ya know .. everyone is different. As Mapper65 said, in our small group, we all enjoy seeing what the other guy finds, we all share top honors from outing to outing. A former hunting partner of mine used to get really aggrivated if he didn't do as well as me. Same applied, sometimes he did better, sometimes I did, that's all part of the game. He started going without me or taking me to places that he got to hit first and later he just didn't call me anymore. We're still friends but we don't detect together anymore, actually I think he eventually gave it up all together. People are weird, I'm sure others have said the same about me a time or too. After all, we are detectorists, we're all considered weird by many, especially by those who have no clue what it's all about. As far as people know we say things like juice in the hole, roundness, we find tokes, and we dress like an ex-studio wrestler!

This situation is a personallity quirk, you may or may not be able to overcome it. If the partnership is to survive, it has to be a joint venture. One guy can't provide all of the good spots and do all of the research just to have his buddy bogart the spots. I have had guys who always ask if I had a spot, yet he would not ever offer his own good spots, that gets old, especially if you find out that he's either holding out or sneaking out to your spots.

Thanks all :)

He thought it sad his friend had chucked away his trust by doing this
for now " he" will be hunting alone on Sunday mornings

For the fellow who says "man up" I'd just like to say that he does a lot of solo hunting on other days of the week including a fair bit of midnight to dawn m.d.
At night he has had a few close calls but can handle myself and is still standing, still night detecting. ;)
