Whats BEST trash coil for M6 ??

I use the DFX which share the coils with the M6. In my ground, I have taken a liking to the White's 5.3. The 4X6 is the best for REALLY trashy areas, but I don't hunt that much in very trashy areas. I get more depth with the 5.3 over the 4X6 too.

I have used coils from White's and most other after-market offerings, and have employed them beyond the woodchip playgrounds or around trashy picnic tables. They have been taken into torn-up sidewalk and street repair, and iron nail infested renovation in parks and schools. Worked around building demolition sites, and vacant lots where old structures stood long ago. Mounted them up for serious hunting around old groves and recreations sites, swimming holes, homesteads, military & pioneer encampment sites, mining camps and logging town sites, and ghost towns from deserts into the mountains. heck, I've even enjoyed just leaving them mounted to the working end of the rod for day-to-day hunting in open grassy lawns and sports fields, or hunting private yards.

I've used these smaller coils on an assortment of models including the 4 DFX's and 4 MXT's and 2 M6's I have owned. In all applications I have looked for a pleasant blend of comfort, good trash handling, reasonably decent depth for the physical size, and quiet, responsive performance.

I will tell you right now that I am, and always have been, quite partial to round search coils rather than elliptical, and I also usually prefer a concentric design to a wide-scan (Double-D) design. Having stated that, and after noting the types of sites I tend to hunt, here are my favorite smaller-than-stock coils for the M6 and MXT in order of preference.

High mineralization you need a DD and low mineralization the concentric.. Here the soil is mild to mid range so the 5.3 blows the 4x6 out of the water as far as depth..

I see that 2 to 5 are DD coils with some being round and oval shape but 1 is a concentric round coil made by whites for the M6/ MXT/ DFX.
I like the 5.3 eclipse my personal favorite coil for my M6 and also like the 5" excel would be my other pick. Oh ya i like the round coils my self so put the coil to the metal and hit the dirt

I use both the 4X6 shooter and the 5.3. In really heavy trash the little shooter does very well, but at the expense of ground coverage and depth. I have to agree with Monte that the 5.3 is an excellent coil and can serve quite well as your main coil for most hunting. I use either often enough where I hunt to justify having both, but if I were going to have just one something in the 6" range would be my choice.

Monte, If you were going to Arizona to hunt for gold with a MXT., What would you use, 6x10 dd or 5.3 Eclipse? I know there are better choices, but this is all i have. Thinks Dean

I'm not Monte, but I've seen several posts over the summer and fall where folks have done well on gold with either of those coils. In heavier mineralization, the 6X10 should have a bit of an edge. If it were me, and I do have both coils, I'd take them both plus the 4X6 to snipe in among the rocks. My two bits.

Dean - check the posting on the MXT forum that refers to "specks" as to gold and the 5.3 coil.

Thanks BarberBill, I didn,t mean Monte only, I know alot of you guys have great advice. I just seen where Monte had been in the desert and knew the ground. thank you very much for the advice. thanks Dean

The main reason i bought an M6 just over 2 years ago was to hunt older but extremely trashy sites and have most of the coils Monte mentioned with exception of the 6" EXcelerator and sold the 4"x 6" Exclipse. For what it's worth the M6 with a 5" EXcelerator allows hunting in extreme trash and is one of the more productive combinations i have . Depth is very good on the 5" EXcelerator and allows hunting very close to metal objects and will isolate very close proximity targets.

The 5.3 Eclipse or 4.5"x 7" EXcelerator would be better for moderate trashy sites that may require a bit more depth as neither has the target separation ability of the 5".Been using the 6" EXcelerator on an Explorer and it's impressive and if the Whites version worked as good on an M6 as the Explorer it may just eliminate these two for me .Just my opinion after many hrs using the M6 at extremely trashy sites.

Hunting trashy sites really boils down to the degree of separation we require to overcome target masking and how willing we are to work with minimal discrimination and possibly remove layers of trash in order to make a few rewarding finds.Just a few thoughts. HH Bill

I purchased the new Bluemax Shooter DD coil wth the dream I was going to clean up on all of those trashy areas I had worked before with the standard coil. Whithin 5 outings I came to one answer, danged if I do, danged if I don't. The standard coil gave me maximum depth, covering more area pure sweep. The smaller coil had by far better seperation, isolating those good targets. But it required a far slower sweep speed, making twice as many sweeps in the same space compared to the standard coil. Far more concentration and precision is required withthe smaller coil...and, sadly, half the depth penetration. The only answer I have is, I use the smaller coil in trashy situation when the majority of the targets are shallow. But in older, deeper target areas, I stick with the standard coil and simply work the areas from different angles. Sigh!!!! Over and over again. Don't we all wish there was a one, cure all, coil. But its still all fun....and thats what counts.....

still beats the 4X6 DD shooter for depth and all-around performance.

Monte

5.3 Eclipse because I like the all-around performance and the balance/feel of the coil. I would take the 6X10 along, but I've had fine success with the 5.3 Eclipse.

If I did use an aftermarket coil, it would be a 6" DD (round) or 4

Thanks Monte!! Great to know..I use it and the Super 12" 95% of the time..
