What's In A Name?

New member
 I like what Monte said about the " names on the detectors". I know it seems ridiculous that a detector's name like Cobra, Bandito, etc would cause people not to buy that certain detector. I have been trying to make this point for years. Again, the performance of the metal detector is the #1 priority... but the name has everything to do with the image of this hobby. Also this hobby is supposed to be fun. I take a lot of pride in the way my metal detector looks and the name on that unit. For example, I won't buy a bright yellow Ace detector. I don't want to attract attention and it looks like a toy. I don't like a really wierd looking detector either ( a star wars ray gun). It all comes down to personal preference and pride in this hobby. Metal detector companies cannot possibly please everyone all the time with every new unit introduced. I think Tesoro does a fine job and I am proud to say that I only own Tesoros. I won't switch companies unless they make a lot of drastic changes that I don't like. That is highly unlikely. As long as they have the lifetime warranty... I am Tesoro for life! Again, I emphasize that performance is #1 and looks , names, colors,... come second. There are other factors involved too like affordability and accessories. Does anyone know what I am saying? Feel free to post your thoughts and ideas. Have a great day and happy hunting from RDF.:tesoro::detecting:

most detectorists end at some point choosing a brand that is related to them, some people like names like R2D2 3000, others just like a simple compadre

I don't care if they call it Bucket Of Dung. If it makes great finds and has the features I want I'll probably buy it.

I personally think the tesoro color schemes are good and the decals a blend in well with the color schemes. I currently own 2 Fisher CZ20's but my other 5 machines are Tesoros, Golden, Deleon, Sandshark, and 2 Cibolas. I've used a lot of other machines over the past 30 years but I nearly always return to a Tesoro as the main line machine. The remind me of that shampoo comercial from back in the 70's? "Sauve does what there does but at half the cost." ; and I might add that for me personally Tesoros often does it better.

By the way the butt ugliest machine I've owned was a CZ3D. What were they thinking about with those decals?

I don't think I would ever Buy or Not Buy a MD Because of its Model Name. There are Brand Names I Wouldn't buy unless they really came out with a model I Really like! Not to say there aren't model names I don't care much for! ............GL & HH..........................Pat

talking about names instead features and performance, I would buy a Tesoro Novia Borracha

Hi Reddirt, Absolutely, the detector "naming" process should be given more consideration, Some Serious thought is needed because of the amount of public scrutny and exposure of our "hobby" nowdays.. Public interest in many cases has produced wild, wierd, and really absurdly "dumb" reactions from many folks. No more fuel is needed to incourage them in their negative thoughts of the hobby. The negativism is of course mostly due to folks lack of knowledge of the hobby, and I feel many of us "detectorists" feel "blindsided" by those who not only think we are nuts, but will seemingly go out of their way to say so in one way or another. That is human nature and we have all been guilty of it at one time or other. We need to "make friends and not enemys" etc, so maybe the name tags will hopefully become more 'friendly" in the future.HH, Charlie

If you don't like the name then go by your local print shop and have a pair made for your detector and call it what you want.

Y'know, there is the name consideration of not wanting to offend anybody. But I believe that is the problem with America nowadays! Everybody is too offended and we've been programmed not to offend ANYBODY. Do what you do, no apologies. Like what you like. I guess we must be discussing the 'Outlaw'..well I like the name and to me it conjures up images of the people whose lost loot I pursue as my particular 'niche' of our hobby. I do also agree that it could be called just about anything if it works!! Labels come off..

Notices, or cares what name is on our detector.. Sorry guys & Gals.... It just isn't an issue........

I have yet heard anyone say....." Excuse me"..why would you be using an Outlaw, Bandido, or any other names detector in the park !!!!! You should be ashamed of yourself for using that ..

If they did.... I would politely suggest they get a life !!

...2 excellent post, I go to the print shop, tell them I want two stickers that read, Bucket Of Dung...Because by George, I have found my share of Dung to fill many Buckets.

Names can make colorful descriptions in the mind. And they make you imagine and maybe associate with rough and tumble characters of the olden days........ Unlike numbers of some units.
Just think of the names given to custom cars, hot rods, domestic cars, boats, fishing lures etc. Names are cool.

Now what about colors. Everyone has a favorite. I hate brown. Especially that dark Tesoro brown, sorry to say. good thing it's offset by the beige color.....
Wear a hard hat a safety vest and use a yellow detector, you will probably never be hassled or given a second glance. You might get a laugh or two if you were hunting with a pink detector (Lady Pink Panther).
A black detector looks professional or night time stalking, Grey detector looks industrial or battleshipish tough, White's blue just looks nice, green and camo blend in good for woods hunting.
Red is too aggressive, white gets dirty looking fast. Metalflake custom paint designs cool, look great make people take a second look and turn into conversation pieces.

 Hey Sven, You made a good point about colors. I literally might just try the hard hat / bright vest trick. Here in Oklahoma... I would look like a street repair guy or a city worker.

On another note,.... I think you guys are missing my point about names. Let me put it another way.....does a Ford Mustang sound good to you or does a Dodge Dart or AMC Pacer sound better?
It is a matter of pride in your metal detector...that is the point I am trying to make. If my point was using a metal detector that went to China deep or one that discriminated everything except gold ...I wouldn't give a rat's %*&#@ what it looked like!!! Thanks to all who responds to my posts...I appreciate it. Happy Hunting, RDF:tesoro::detecting:

Hey RDF, I must admit, I seemed to have indeed, missed your point, and also have to admit to being more than a little dissapointed with most all, if not all the replys.. I thought a goodly and most important portion of your post was concerning the "Image" we detectorist now should like to be conveying to those not famular with our hobby. Seems to me, that point got lost somewhere amongst all the clamor and jawing about color, pride of machine and what makes us feel good,Some replys even slanted toward not giving a rip about what folks think of us or the image we portray of our great hobby.I would say that gives some pretty good insight into the reason for some of the negative press, shutdowns and restrictions in many parts of our country now days. Sorry for the rant fellers, but those concerns need be given some serious thought. HH Charlie

What gives this hobby bad press is not following the metal detector code of ethics.

Hi Oak, I think your time would be well spent to go to RDF's first post and search out Monte's post where he comments about the detector name situation. As RDF first "implied" his agreement with Monte, I will continue in my agreement also. HH Charlie
