What's the best spot to metal detect ? In the surf or on the beach?

Hi John,

Merry Christmas Friend!

I have spent many hundreds of hours hunting wet and dry and in my experience the largest number of valuable finds have been found in the water!

Sun-block, cold water, and wet conditions generally are a great combo for rings to fall off that normally would never come off.

People playing in the water account for many of these losses, more-so I think than swimming.

The bulk of the hundreds of gold rings I have found have been within fifty feet of the water line!

GL&HH Fellow Hunter,

CJ

I guess what you are saying stands to reason, with the water causing rings to slide off. Sounds like great advice, and with your experience I'm sure I won't go wrong. I have an Excal II with a 10" head and I am really just a beginner.

I also have and Etac and have spent most of my hunting time around Colonial sites and have found some great finds, including a George Washington Inauguration button last year.

About 3 years ago I was in Connecticut visiting a friend who lived near a beach (Compo Beach in Westport) and got Lucky and found a womans Rolex watch. appraised at $5,800.00 .I am now branching out and will focus on Beach/Surf hunting for a change. I live in Maryland and will now focus on beaches from Ocean City, NJ to Ocean City, MD Thanks for the advice.

John, I believe CJ is 100% correct, I have hunted mostly wet sand and found some rings but subscribe to his thinking. For some of us who are water challenged i.e. heavy surf, drop offs and a heavy tide don't forget a PFD. I have just got a great Kayaking life vest for Christmas with lots of opening to swing my arms but yet light weight, hopefully I can put CJ's theory to work.
I am headed back down to Mexico in the middle of Jan. for 2 months and plan on hunting everyday for 4 hrs. or more and will keep a log as to where I have found my rings, type (Plata or Ora - gold or silver), tide and hours spent on each beach. I averaged a ring every 4 hrs hunting wet sand so am looking forward to trying the water with a PFD.
MERRY CHRISTMAS

Gerry

CJ 's right if water conditions let ya in -nothing is worth your life stay out of rough water -try hunting the towel line on these days.most of my good finds are waist deep or less as people play in these spots .also shallow is good as when a lady is sitting in surf splashing or playing with a toddler rings fall off so check this area also.watch the people they will tell ya where to hunt-concession areas if one.try to hunt early morning or evenings on busy beaches so as not to bother people -we already are disliked some folks and remember to fill in hole-NEVER-NEVER SHOW YOUR FINDS

I've found many rings in the fresh water lakes. I believe that in addition to what has been mentioned, water dehydrates the fingers making them shrivel enough for rings to come off easier. I am trying to learn more about surf hunting too because there is also the added element of people being tossed about in the waves causing them to lose valuables.

In the water is where you will have more luck. Certainly rings are found in the sand on the beach BUT not as many as are found in the water. Also anybody with a land detector can hunt a beach and that leaves less on it for the avid person that hunts BOTH the beach and the water. The beaches in my area get hammered by all kinds of land machines, I don't bother with them, I head straight out into the beautiful water!!
