What's the difference between the Surfmaster PI Plus and the PI Pro? Also, what are the advantages of using a PI detector over say an Excalibur other

Kinda new to this and looking for some info so any help would be appreciated!

plus has 25us amd pro has 15 us pulse timing. pro has abillity to find smaller gold items.
pi will detect deeper in black sand but will not discriminate iron.

I currently have an MXT that I have used on the beach several times and found several pieces of jewelry, including a nice 14k ring, but I want to be able to get out in the water. Haven't seen ayone else in the water where I hunt.
I want to get a waterproof unit but don't want to spend the 1k on an Excalibur. On the other hand I don't want to waste my time walking over good stuff. I dig everything so the lack of discrimination on a PI unit is fine.
So a good PI unit will get deeper than an Excalibur? I saw a report online that said the Excal would go deeper, but then again, you never know what to believe......

Are you hunting the salt water beaches on the Atlantic side? If you are, planning to get in that water will most likely result in disappointment. Only rarely is the surf calm enough to hunt near shore, Jon. Most days, it will beat you to death. Excals are very common over here and work well. But most hunters don't go past knee deep in the water and any beach type detector will do that as long as you don't drop it in the surf.
PI's reign for depth and sensitivity, even over Excals, I've seen both in action. But Excals, despite their weight/balance/QC issues, have a discrimination mode that PI owners only dream about for now.
Next time out, try hunting that beach in all-metal mode with the MXT and see how many iron bits you dig up, and keep in mind the PI will find even more. The PI sensitivity comes with a price some are willing to pay, some aren't.
Good luck with your decision and HH.

Why not just get a White's Surf PI Pro? Price is right even new, used better, you want the Pro with its 15Usec, is waterproof, has good depth.

P.S. forgot the Head Hunter PI would also be good!!!

I do run my MXT with no discrimination on the wet sand with good results. Problem is I hate having to keep a certain distance from the waterline to avoid soaking my expensive piece of equipment.
I won an auction yesterday on a Surfmaster PI Plus for. Figured I would get my feet wet (no pun intended) with a $300 detector that I can probably sell at any time any recoup my money....maybe pickup that Excalibur next summer and give it a shot. Thanks all
