I found this my first time out in an old school yard that is still currently used.
I apologize for the shadow on the left side of each view. I have one edge view and the top and bottom of the object. It is very heavy, like lead but very hard. I cannot scratch it with a knife tip. It is shiny although very dark in color. There are no scratches on any of the flat surfaces but there are some chunks out of the edge on both the top and bottom.
It is 3/16" thick and about the size of a nickle, hex shaped - about 3/4" across the flats. The edges are about 3 - 4 degrees off of 90 degrees for a straight side.
It registered about VDI 45 - 47 on my MXT, about 2" deep in grass.

It looks like a carbide insert for a lathe or other type of machine tool. The chipped area is why it was probably tossed out.

you guys are HOT! <img src="/metal/html/biggrin.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":D">
I showed it to a friend who sells cutting tools and he said the same thing. It does seem to be carbide. I thought I could throw you off by telling you where I found it.
It was my first time out, ever. The Whites dealer here in Midland took me out to the school yard that is next door to his house. He did not know what it was but stated that he had found quite a few of them. I have no idea how these things could get in a school yard. Maybe Daddy brought a chipped tool home from work and Junior played with it and took it to school.
I have a larger carbide tool that has some interesting readings on my MXT. I will post them in a couple of days when I can check it out a little more.
Thanks everyone for scratching your head and trying.
Lee
