Out of everywhere, where in your OPINION gets you the oldest of coins?
And what era are these places built?

a. Old Schools
b. Tot lots
c. Churches
d. Random Fields
e. Beaches
f. Or long drawn out, thought out places that look really really really good.

I have some pretty old stuff in my area, so far its old ball-fields that have givin me my keepers so far.
What about you?

That really depends on what your looking for...

If your looking for old coins and relics:
old homes
old fields
old water wells
old schools
old parks
old mills

If you want modern:
parks
beaches/swimming holes
modern homes

To name a few.:detecting:

Depends on where in the country I'm hunting. Old cities: Park re-landscaping areas and older homes. Rural: Foot paths that are tight in to original sites and picnic groves.

From the land of the Bluenose.....seems here at least sirthe best place for the oldies is along the paths to the inner lakes. Happy hunting!

In the city, parks, construction sites and old homes. In rural area's, old fairgrounds and old parks. If one does research, then sites will change. HH jim tn

Ironically, the three oldest coins I have found, 2 were right by my drive way, wheat pennies, from the thirties, and one at a park circa 1925. I have found one good silver dime 1955. Everything else is clad. I have driven all over this state looking for good spots and end up bust. I think some of it has to do with my detector. Its at a repair place right now to see how bad it is really.

old town urban demolition sites. Gotta hit them just right though: right after a building is removed, but before they scrape too deep, and before and fill-dirt is added. Real hit & miss. Some can be lame, and others quite good, depending on if the building coming down is already 2nd generation (like there was a board & batton building there in the previous century) and/or if there were drip-grates in the old floor, whether or not it had a basement, etc.... Also tricky to access these sites. Gotta wait till after 5pm and .... uh .... be discreet.

Yeah, I know about being discreet! Georgia dosen't cater to detector enthusiasts at all.

Almost alway's old park's,fairground's,old churches, along sidewalk's, any place where the public has came and gone for many year's. I haven't been able to get the nad's up to knock on people's doors. The one's who do seem to do pretty well. Good luck, Gary

Have any of you gone all CSI when detecting? I know I have, I stop and think, and playback things in my head. Like maybe, there was a shindig here a long time ago, and there were people playing, and then it zooms into someones pocket. There is a coin, jingling all slow motion, until it falls on the ground. Then, its like I fast forward into time to see me there. Kinda stupid, but it passes the time and makes me laugh.

Most people won't let you MD their 1800's house. I went to an old town and MD'ed down the old sand roads around the houses. Most people showed interest and was friendly. Heck, I was almost in their back yards. I made lots of friends and opened doors to more MD'ing sites. I found one coin that dated in the 1700's. At an old train station I found nothing, but the sand road leading to it I found a 1839 cent and a 1907 Canadian quarter worth $50. I have also found gold and silver rings in a sand road.

I have been doing an area for two years like that. They are putting a hi-way in. Good thing is I don't have to be discrete. I have been there so much they think I am a city worker. The cops all know me and stop at times to see how I am doing.

Right now, I'm waiting for the next set of houses to be torn down.

Old paths and trails have been good to me. I picked up 2 Newfoundland 5c pieces 1896 and 1876 and several copper coins between 1855 and 1900 last year. Not a lot but some keepers.

Old house sites, before 1900 are my next favourite location.

My best old coin sites have been old homes. The state is widening a road and several homes have been demoed. More to come. I go on weekends and hunt the lots. No issues yet and some good finds, Beale.

John, you say: "The cops all know me and stop at times to see how I am doing." Funny how that works, eh? Act like "you own the place" and no one questions what you're doing. It's all psychology. Act like you're guilty, worried, scared, etc... and sure enough, someone wants to know what you're doing. But act like you have nothing to worry about, and no one pays you any mind.

This is true. If people ask what I am doing, I tell them that I am a coin collector, and when I got injured in the army, the doc told me to get more excersize, so its like I am getting paid to work out! Which I did get injured so it helps.
The little kids are the funniest, I had a group of little boys show up and followed me around a park for a while, going ohhhh and wow. One of the kids was like i can make one! All i need is a battery and a nail and a piece of wire. I was like wow. So i told him he was on the right track, but he was going to make an electromagnet not a metal detector.
