Memphis TN for me - I'm a native of this place unfortunately but recent events in the city has lead to a couple of stellar places to hunt if you don't mind finding a bunch of trash. There's not a lot of detecting interest here compared to the amount of city residents, but there are plenty of places to hunt here - the most successful hunts are private property but some of the older "hammered" sites still give up goodies thanks to new technology!
When we took trips to St Louis when I was a kid, the finds up there were exponentially better than the paltry clad and occasional Wheats found here in similarly aged neighborhoods. I remember finding more older coins and jewelry in schoolyards, and on one hunt in particular with my dad and uncle, I remember skunking both of them with the higher clad count - my uncle thought he had me beat with his Merc and a couple of Wheats that day!!! We all had a "wrap-up" after hunting this one school and were comparing finds - when it got to be my turn I produced almost $10.00 in clad, a silver necklace, a small gold earring, a sterling ring, and coinwise I had a 1920 Wheat, silver Rosie, and a Civil War bullet which must have been dropped after someone bought it as a souvenir.
This was 1989 and I was 12 years old - I'll never forget that summer using the 1265-X - my dad had a basic unit with discrimination (can't remember the model or manufacturer), and my uncle swung a White's 5900 DiPro (I may have got the model name wrong). We all found handfuls of coins at each school we visited, with my uncle claiming the edge on most occasions due to his experience and detector. Uncle George passed away unexpectedly in 2000, and was an avid detectorist for close to 30 years. If not for him, I would have likely never been introduced to the hobby, and undoubtedly he still accompanies me while detecting...
Still, Dad and I are able to hit many local sites and reminisce about those older hunts - and in the days before I turned 16 my most favorite pastime was TH'ing anywhere I could. As long as we've been doing this there has been a competition for the oldest coin found - something we can brag about jokingly over future cups of coffee...
