Which coil for the SE for the salt beach?

AlexP

New member
Hello,

I am buyng the Explorer SE Pro tomorrow. Most of the time I will hunt on the beach (wet, salty sand). Will the stock 11" coil be OK, or do I have to, for example get, the 8" Detech Coil (http://www.joanallen.co.uk/a_acc_minelab_explorer.html) to use at the beach? I am new to treasure hunting.

Thanks a lot for your help.

Alex from Bulgaria

Alex, I'd suggest you give the new coil a go...

It should be perfect for the beach !

Down the line after you really get to understand your new SE Pro,
you will then have a good idea of what your next coil should be.

Enjoy your new detector !!!:detecting:

Thanks. I won't be getting another coil then. As you say, the standard coil should be fine for the beach.

I took my SE on a fresh water beach.....my advice is to invest in a good scoop. I was in all metal mode and was digging 15 to 20 inches easy. found a lots of great deep deep stuff. I just wish they made a waterproof version of the SE. I can only imagine what it could find in the water. I compared the SE to my Excal 2 and the SE won hands down in the sand.

I agree with both gentlemen.... I recently took my SE to the beach and the stock coil is fine and having the sand scoop is "gotta have" category.

For what it's worth folks my wife and I use a Jimmy Sierra stainless steel "Shorty" scoop,

as does my hunting buddy and his wife.:twodetecting:

I have finally bought the SE Pro and have been using it for 2 days now. It was doing fine in the forest and the field. However I went to a salty beach today which is known for its very ferrous sand and I found nothing. Most of the time the LCD screen in digital mode was frozen at showing 31/31 for both ferrous and conductive. I used the factory settings and the 11" stock coil. Setting the iron mask to a high level and also discriminating everything but coins didn't help much. Could it be just that the SE has automatic ground balance and maybe I need a detector with manual ground balance for that beach? What settings do you think might help to overcome the influence of the ferrous sand? As I said earlier, I am new to metal detecting and the SE is not a simple detector, so it may be just that it needs to be set up properly.
