Which coil to run where and why

I'm running a 1250 and have three coils to choose from. These include the 10X14 DD, the 8" and the 4 1/2 crossfire II coils.
I know that I should run the little one when I am in lots of junk or trashing areas to seperate the targets better. What should I search parks with? Should I run the DD or the 8" Crossfire and why? Thanks

You should run the DD only if the areas you search are high in mineralization. You get better ground coverage with this coil but it's heavy and doesn't discriminate anywhere near that of a concentric coil and loves bottlecaps. I would use the 8.5 or pick up a 12.5.

I also have all 3 plus the 12" coil. I have only been detecting a little over a year and still use the 8" the most in parks. It takes longer than the bigger coils but its ligher and does the best job so far for me. I had used the 10 x 14 not to long ago in a huge park after using the 8" a couple of hours and really enjoyed the coverage. This was the 3rd time using the DD coil so i cannot tell you much about the pros and cons but think i will try a few more parks with it. I also am told that here in Colorado the soil has some high mineralization so thought the DD coil would work better for this. The 4" really is great in trash areas and around play ground equipment ,etc. Hope this helps a bit. Happy diggin. <img src="/metal/html/glasses.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":geek:">

The old farm stead that we own is full of rusted old piece of iron and that soil is mineralized big time, so the DD would be great there. Without a doubt the big DD is much heavier than the two smaller coils but I can cover some ground with it. I also have been slowing down on my swings so I would like all of the ground cover I can get. Yes those ##### bottle caps, dug 10 to 12 yesterday. I'm headed back out today to one of the smaller older parks in the city that doesn't get a lot of traffic these days but is in an old neighborhood from the cities beginnings. Maybe I will try to post some pictures one day.

Its the best all around coil. Its kind of a compromise of the smaller and larger coils. It gets great depth, it's sensitive to small targets, works well in discriminate mode, is light and can be easily used as a 4 1/2 in coil simply by raising it above the ground about 4-5 inches, thus shrinking the detection cone-pattern, with a small loss of detection depth. Unless you are searching farmers fields for old homesteads or hunted out parks where depth might be a bonus, you will do just fine with the 8 inch coil. I have used the 4 1/2, the 8, 9 1/2 and 12 1/2 inch coils on the GTA500, Grandmaster CX, Freedom Ace and the GTI 1500. The smallest and largest coils have their little niche where they become a great asset, however, the 8 inch or 9 1/2 inch on the 1500 is used 95% of the time.
There are also after market coils available through Kellyco, of which I have heard some mixed reviews. Some worked well, some were a bit unstable and worked not so well with discrimination. So, if you try one, you are on your own. Personally, I feel the manufacturers have put a lot of R&D into their equipment, and know what works best.

Lee I also run a 1250 but only use the 4.5 inch coil for a few reasons it makes the detector lighter and less wear and tear on my arms. I find the same things with the 4.5 as the 8 inch and get good depth. Also I have all the time in the world to detect. If I just got out once in a while then I would use the 8 inch to cover as much ground as fast as I could.

The new 7x10 is also an excellent coil, very sensitive, and easy to pinpoint with.
