Which Coil? X-12, 15" WOT or SE Pro...

Hi All. I have the chance to pick up a SE (not pro) at a pretty good price and I am looking for a good beach killer setup. I have heard good things about the X-12, WOT and SE Pro coils. Will be using it in SoCal black sand type beaches. I am sure a few of you have some experience with these.... give up some insight, pretty please. =)

I should throw a 10 x 12 SEF in there as well.

This will be my first minelab.

Thanks in advance.

If this is your first Minelab machine take some time to learn the Explorer with the coil that comes on it. They are a great machine but you can always get a larger coil once you decide you are going to keep it. JMHO. HH :minelab:

I have bought a Quattro recently and I was immediately tempted to buy a WOT or a 15x12 SEF. I am glad I did not. I still have a bad feeling that I am not sure what the machine tells me. I have also found out in the All Metal mode that our fields are full of iron. I did not notice that with my traditional discrimination analog detectors (they do a great job on iron elimination).

Next week I will try the machine on a salt water beach, which I regularily detect once a month (and I think there is noone else doing that too). I have quite cleaned the beach with my other machines, so now I am going for the really deep stuff. If the standard coil works well, I will need a larger coil next time:)

On the beach you are digging most everything. The SE has an excellent disc and depth on the beach and transitions well between the wet and dry sand. It doesnt care much for having the surf roll over the coil thou. Clean between the coil cover and coil after every hunt.... takes very little black sand to cause some falsing. If you have the standard coil that came with the SE..... ya you need to up grade to one of those coils. The coil that came with the original SE just isnt nearly as good as the standard that came with the Exp II or the Pro. They can take time to learn.... but your learning experience on a beach isnt nearly as longer. Not nearly the trash or minerals you have dirt digging. Dont go to large .... there is a downside to a large coil... good depth at the expense of small jewelry. Id still recommend the Pro coil just because they are factory standard coils made for the SE.
