Which coil?

Hello I mainly relic hunt in te woods and fields. Lately I've been hunting more yards in town. And the trash is so annoying. I have a F75 ltd2 w the stock coils. What would be a nice coil that would complement the two coils I have. The 11" is just too big for the trashy areas and I feel the 5" isn't deep enough thanks.

I have a 5" DD for my F70.
Seems to match the depth on my standard 10" coil and even pass it.
Comes close to the depth of my F75 10X12" DD...surprisingly.
In great soil in Kansas I could easily hit 10", in horrible soil here in the city in the south where finding or IDing anything past 5" is a gift I have dug old nickels, silver dimes and old wheats and IH's at the 7-8" level with that coil which is miraculous.
Used it in the woods and that coil worked great, also.
If you used one not sure why you don't get the same great depth that most other owners post about in this forum.

For somewhat of a in between size coil there are three I have used. There is the NEL Sharpshooter which is actually a 5.5 x 8.5" size I believe and is a DD and works good. Fisher has the concentric little 6.5" football shaped coil which I always liked, but just doesn't have the target separation of a DD coin. And last but not least, Fisher also makes 5 x 10 DD and where trash is moderate heavy is my favorite coil. Both the Sharpshooter and 5 x 10 are deeper then the 5", but what you might gain in depth from their size, you will loose, also because of their size, in heavy trash. Nothing separates like the 5". Good luck! HH jim tn

There is one more that falls in the class of the 5"DD and the 6.5" football coil, that would be the NEL snake, 3.5"x 6.5" and it is a DD coil.

But I think you would be happier with the 5x10 it has good separation and also better depth than the little coils.

Better yet get them all, I did.

I like the 6.5" concentric football coil!
It handles Iron better, (its a concentric, not a DD)
Decent ground coverage,
Very light weight.

In heavy trash your not going to get much depth beyond the trash anyway, so if the trash isn't that deep and you want to sort-a cherry pick I'm thinking the 6.5" Elliptical concentric would do well.

I also like the concentric coils. I have a 10 in. and a 6.5 in coils on my f 75. That not saying that the DD coil are not good but I just all ways used the concentric one.

Kinda odd the 5" is deep, mine is just as deep as the stock 11" DD.

Well I've just took it for granted that the 5" coil wasn't as deep as the 11". Never really compared mine. I considered the Nel sharpshooter but somebody told me it was more a coin coil vs relics.

My 5" isn't quite as deep as my 5 x 10 dd and that isn't quite as deep as the 11" coil. These small coils today, though, are surprisingly deep. From the depth I get with mine in my soil, unless you have harsh ground, you shouldn't leave much behind because of lack of depth. I do know from my experience, though, for those trashy spots you will find more co-located good targets using a double d coil then if using a concentric. HH jim tn

I use the 5" coil 95 % of the time on my F 75 and have done very well. Its hitting coins in the 6 to 8" range with ease in my soil.I love the challenge of hunting in trash and iron but thats just me.HH !

I have a new respect for that 5" coil. That little thing is pretty deep. I dug small bullets at 8"no problem. It just don't cover much ground. It's needed for extremely trashy ground.

I just ordered a 10" eliptical concentric for my F75. I have been using the 10" eliptical off my others (first the F5, now the 8500) with 'ok' performance for what I use it for but decided to get one more tuned for the F75. I like the 10" eliptical concentric coil. It is kind of like a hybrid DD in a way. I still get very good target separation close to DD performance while keeping the discrimination characteristics of a concentric coil. I think it is one of the better coils sizes/types made today.

My only problem with the 3x6 concentric is that it has a very wide surface footprint as compared to the 10". At least that is how I recall it. I may get another and go again as I run my current F75 totally different that I ran my first ones, at least in regards to Gain settings. Today I normally stay with a Gain setting somewhere between 1 and 60, and many occasion hunt with the Gain set at 1. The only time I raise my Gain up into the 90's is when I am in the FA mode. The 3x6 may turn out to work much better at the lower settings. I dunno.

Good Luck,
HH

Mike, I use one of these 10" ellipticals on my F70 from time to time, it is the standard coil and comes with that unit and I have it mounted on my detector right now. All I can say about this thing is I kinda love it.
The separation is great, almost seems close to a DD, depth is extremely good in all types of soil and situations and this thing found me a gold ring that was nestled between a couple of pieces of trash on like my 4th hunt with that detector. Pretty much paid for my whole rig on that one.
In 4H it was a bit jumpy but a beautiful high tone nickel signal kept repeating so I got curious.
Pretty large and probably resized and all the marks were erased after that.
I took it to a jeweler for testing and the young girl told me it was 6.2 grams in both white and yellow gold 14k and offered a lowball $80 dollars to buy it.
I said no thanks.
Later on another hunter told me he found a lost ring for a friend that looked exactly like it and it was not 14k but platinum and 18k yellow gold so I still need to test it because it is not ever going in for melt.
Hunting with this coil in pop top and all kinds of trash seems effortless, the sounds and response I get on most targets is hard to explain the difference compared to my DD's but I can use the word "sweet" and mean it.
It seems to love to find silver and gold jewelry for some reason.
This is a valued, often used and very productive accessory in my arsenal and a blast to hunt with.

Hi Revier,
Yep, that same coil found me a lot of gold on my F5. The one off my Omega works on the F75 but it looses a little bit of that "sweetness" you described because it is just not tuned for it. I'm looking forward to the tuned coil.

On a reverse note, I have a 10"X14" RIF Ranger DD coil tuned for my F75 that I prefer using on the ETPro and Omega. Go figure, right?

Mike in your above statement I'm a little confused  it reads like you are saying that the footprint from a 10" elliptical concentric coil has a "Smaller" footprint than the much smaller 3.5" X 6.5" elliptical concentric coil does?
Now, I could understand if the 10" you were talking about was a DD coil.

Did I miss something?

Mark

Hi Mark,
No. That is the way I recall it. I had one of the little 3 x 6 concentrics when they first came out and I distinctly recall not liking it because of the size of the footprint at ground level. But like I said, I ran the F75 different then than I do now so that may well have been the reason.

After I get some time with the 10" coil I'll have toget a 3x6 again and see if that is still true.
