Thats going to depend on who you ask. Someone not having used an explorer very long will likely love the Etrac because out of the box you catch up quickly. Little more stable the info is put to you in a way that some like better. But the bottom line is depth and fines for the money. There are changes on the Etrac id like to see on the SE, but thats just bells and whistles. Im still holding out for a significant change.... in processor, balance, and weight. After the learning process a lot comes down to the guy behind the machine.... it always has. I know before the new coils came out no one would have let go of the Exp II for an SE.

I feel the biggest innovation in new Explorer models is the lightweight new design 11" DD coil which does away with the nose heavy older Explorers and greatly improves the ergonomics making long hunting days a true reallity. Many ardent Explore XS or 11 users have excelled for many years putting up with the weight and ergonomics and many are still in use since their inception in 99 which ought to tell you something and feel Dew said it all in one post...

You are right Dan..... coils and headphones have been the greater improvements with the best results..... thats not just ML, but some of the others companies as well.

Dump the Explorer XS and buy either an Explorer SE with an SE Pro coil or an SE Pro with SE Pro coil. In heads up comparisons in the field between an Explorer XS and my SE with the SE Pro Coil the poor Explorer XS got owned on small silver and gold, solid signals on my machine, the XS could not hear them. Both machines were running my settings.
I'm not a fan of....Explorer SE coils, you want an SE Pro coil its a WAY better coil
I'm not a fan of....ETrac, I crush ETrac's on deep silver, DEEP I said, 2 feet deep. Before you call BS on depth note that we were digging 1700's 8 reales on a wet salt water beach, they are about the size of a silver dollar. Here's the thing about the Etrac, you CAN get the Etrac settings wrong. Case in point, I head down to my local 1700's spanish shipwreck treasure beach and my buddy with his Etrac has a big hole dug. I say what did you get? Nothing he says, thought I heard one but it vanished. I walk over and check the hole with my SE and its screaming big silver. I say what the hell are you talking about its right there. He comes over and scans, nothing. I say you gotta be kidding me here plug your headphones into my machine, he hears the SE screaming big silver and can't believe it. He starts working all the Etrac buttons trying to get a signal lol. He did eventually get a decent signal, not as good as I was getting but the point is you really can't get an Explorer SE settings wrong, its set it and forget it simple for most sites. Same beach different day, small area that had given up a few coins was worked over by the Etrac already. I walked 3 feet and said there's a target there, there, and there. Etrac nada. 4 hours later we were still digging in the same hole recovering a total of 34 8 reales from that hole. The Etrac can make some finds don't get me wrong but IMO an Explorer SE/SE Pro with the SE Pro coil is more deadly in the hands of an experienced operator.

It would be an improvement and worthwhile IMO but would not bring it up to the SE or SE Pro standard entirely. The SE and SE Pro are significantly faster machines with quicker recovery speeds and are better on small gold and silver targets. Tone wise I would say the SE and SE Pro are less muddy, more clear. Advantage goes to the Explorer XS on deep nickels, they ruined that advantage on the Explorer II though :-( Having used all models of the Explorer my top choice is the SE with an SE Pro coil or the SE Pro.

Actually I have not used a pro coil on an XS, but I have built many coils for Explorers and disected many Explorer and after market Explorer coils so I know Explorer coil tech pretty well. I am highly impressed with Minelabs design of the SE Pro coil by the way, my hats off to them.
