Hi all. I am looking for every ones opinion who own both whites and Mine Lab machine. I am looking at buying a machine and I am looking at the whites xlt the MXT300 or the Mine Lab Sovereign. In your opinion which one do you like and why? I am looking at finding old coins as well as some relic. It will be use in non salty areas as I am In Ontario Canada and I am hunting old abandoned railways beds as well as some old home steads and I like to hit the odd tot lot and park.

I have the two and do well with both.
The MXT I like a bit more because it has knob settings which I prefer.
Either of these two are good.
MXT can be used for gold prospecting better in a sense than the XLT
I have the standard 9.5 coil and not the 12 inch usually find coins 5 to 8 inches
Both use the same battery holders and are easy to use for long periods, plus well balanced

Thank you Joel-Winnipeg for the info. I am in the market to get one machine and I am trying to decide which one to get as they are so close to the price range as well as being able to do lots with each of them.

Besides being a White's dealer, I am also a Minelab fan.......odd combo you might think? That was before the White's V3 which combined the versatility of the DFX/XLT/MXT and the deep silver seeking Minelabs. Now one machine does it all. I say all of this as a preface to the following:

As much as I like Minelab, I have a tendency to shy away since the change of ownership. I have read that they are now made in Malaysia and just this morning on the Explorer forum, someone wrote that repairs are taking up to 42 days in their one service center in the US which someone else said they are closing and moving it somewhere else. White's on the other hand is made in the USA with repair centers all across the US and turn around time of 2 to 5 days. I sold my favorite SE Pro and I have another one on the Classifieds now.

For your type of hunting, I would suggest taking a long look at the regular MXT with the 950 coil. The 12" coil is often way too much for most hunters and their ground. The 12" might be OK for your relic hunting if the ground is not too trashy, but you will probably find the 12" way too much coil for coin shooting. If funds are available, the MXT with the stock 950, 5.3 and 12" with some kind of pinpointer is one of the best detector packages on the market for just about every kind of hunting.

If you do pick up a MXT 300, I would suggest the purchase of the 6x10 DD as well for the coin hunting part of your package and one day get the 5.3 for the really trashy areas. My Nancy moderates the MXT forum and her MXT is strong competition for the V3 that I use, just not as versatile but a thousand dollars less......yea, great machine for the $$.

Thank you Larry. I am looking at the White's line. I was looking at the MXT300 as I was trying to compare it to the White's XLT. The Minelabs before the change were really good. Now that you mentioned the turn over on their repair I am more inclined to the whites as I hear from our fellow Canadians here who had problems and sent their machines down to be fixed only to be returned with out a cost in some cases.

Don't overlook the M6 it's a cracking machine....a simplified version of the mxt. You'll find everything with the m6 and it's one of the most simple machines to use on the market.I also use a sovereign GT.I've just put a little joey coil on this machine and i'm having the best time i've ever had with any detector.(i live in England so my hunting will be different to yours).Out of the two detectors i would personally choose the GT because it has increased my finds rate over all my other detectors but either is an excellent choice.

I'll chip in here and back up the recommendations of either the MXT or the M6 with the 9.5 coil. As Larry mentioned the 6X10 is a good addition. I find it considerably more useful in moderate to somewhat heavy trash than the 9.5 and if the trash is truly heavy the 5.3 is very good. If you're really overwhelmed by trash the 4X6 is superb, but at the expense of ground coverage and depth.

I have an XLT and a Sovereign. I rarely use the Sovereign because I find I'm not able to ID my targets as well as with the XLT. But it does have it's advantages especially when coupled with that big WOT coil for hunting sand flats at low tide (has the reach of a PI and enough discrimination to eliminate digging all those hair pins that are very good at mimicking gold on a PI. When I buy my next detector, it will be a V3. My second choice would be the MXT.

I have a xlt spectrum,it .was my first machine, sold it missed it.got a prizm v to make up for it gone.needless to say i have a xlt again. And prizm sits.As you know the xlt,is still out there doing its thing. If i had the money I would get the MXt as a second machine but I don't .i'm happy with the xlt.You can't go wrong with either one as a first machine that will last.
