which mode is best???:detecting::minelab:

ok all, im in need of info: excalibur 2:minelab:which mode is best to use and why do you think its best mode? auto mode?disc mode? or all metal mode? now ive had my excalibur2 for about 14 months now and im still learning all about it, ive done very well with mine, ive mainly used disc mode and have tried all metal mode with only getting junk, so which mode is the best on the beach??dry or wet sand...??so a little help please???:clapping:

I hunt at the Jersey Shore and Delaware. I use an Excal 800 on all metal mode. Once I hit a target, I switch to disc to see if I want to dig the target. If it is iron, I do not dig. If it is "good" I dig, then go back to all metal mode. If I am hitting a lot of targets in one area, I go back to disc, then dig all the good targets.

I recently read on the forum about someone finding a navigational instrument, which may have been iron. In this example, the only issue with skipping over iron objects is that you could pass over something interesting, like a spike, musketball, or other something else.

Happpy hunting (and remember to fill in your holes).

John, I hope someone jumps in about the "auto mode in sensitivity". I have spoken to a # of people including a Minelab tech who was adamant not to hunt in the "auto mode", If I am not mistaken because you may get to much signal splash back with that high a setting (my interpretation). I have quite often wondered why if the auto mode is not the way to go why would Minelab design such a feature into the machine? Clive's books really did not address the subject for my feeble brain to understand and now for the kicker, a fellow who I respect as a Metal Detectorist hunts only in "auto"so go figure.
Gulf Hunter, and the other pro's what do you say about "auto mode" Teach us youngsters

I hunt in Disc 0, SEns 6-7,thresh barely audible, and volume 3/4 of the way. At this setting I can hunt in AM and hear objects deeper than disc if pickings are few. If there's a lot, say, after a storm hunt in disc first and get the goodies. After you have had a good run of the beach and targets are becoming fewer and fewer switch back over to AM and get the deeper targets. Just be sure to check every target in disc and if you get some good signal (even if its choppy) dig it up. It some times gets better and better sounding as you get some of the sand out of the hole. I have dug several signals that make sound in AM and make no sound in disc until I am one or two scoops down. Those can be pretty exciting. Dont use the Auto setting. I usually stop using AM and hunt in disc in the water (Once I get past my knees) as it seems to false a litttle too much to really make out whisper tones. I hear the disc tones better once im in the water.

NO AUTO, EVER! I once went about 25 straight gold-less hunts experimenting with Auto. When I switched back to manual the gold came back. It is a LOSER!
