Which very large size coil PI's have good performance for the $ ?

David

New member
I am looking at buying a very large coil type of PI machine such as below. I heard they will NOT work in the goldfields high mineralized soils but WILL only work in low mineral areas like farmers fields.

The brands I know are Pulse Star II Pro, Lorenz, Deepers, and Detech models.

I see some other big coil(being square or rectangular within PVC pipe) PI's that are not as well known, for example from Fitzgerald(@#Xc&%) in Oregon with his Maxi-Pulse Plus and 5000 @ $695.00>("In recent field tests the MAXI out performed other deepseeking locators costing as much as six times the amount of the MAXI PULSE.") I am somewhat skeptical since they have long range detectors on his web site as I do not beleive in them at all.

There is also some other mine clearence units from different companies to look at as well.

Very briefly, of these type units, what is the best one(s) for the $ dollar to performance ratio if someone knows ?? OR has someone even tried just one and can give some feedback here please ??

Thank You.

Hi David,

I have not tried any of the detectors you mentioned, but I have tried others including ones I have built from kits. Now, with that said, it is very hard to answer your question with any specific answer because we don't know just what you are wanting from a detector with a large coil. There is a big difference looking for large iron objects and looking for something like large gold nuggets. Then there is the location and just what possible negative conditions may exist. Simply stated, some detectors work better than others in electrically noisy environments.

So, you are correct, some detectors work better while looking for large objects and not gold. Others will not work well in different types of ground, especially if looking for gold objects because of a lack of any ground balance feature. Now, the ground balance feature isn't needed if looking for large objects with long time constants, since the delay can be adjusted back far enough that the ground causes little or no signal.

So, to better answer your question, we could use a few more details as to what you want to do with the detector.

Now, having said that, many detectors that you didn't mention will allow the use of large coils. The key is the ability to adjust the delay far enough that the coil functions correctly and the readily available coil. So, a wider range of detectors can be used than those you mentioned. The key is finding or building a large coil if that is what you want to use. Fortunately, building a coil isn't extremely difficult. Also, there are a couple of websites that can help in them area.

I haven't answered your question but I hope I have brought a few issues forward that should be discussed to better make a decision.

If you want to use those pi in the gold fields forget it.They can not see the small stuff , here in europe we use them as relic detectors. They pick up big stuff
like spears ,batlle axe,hoards....They are very hot on iron and very bad on gold.I have tested 15'' coil with 18 mm gold coin and I had to scrub the coin to the coil to get some kind of signal. So with the big 1x1m coil it must be 1kg to get signal:biggrin:.And by the way almost no discrimination. For the goldfields GPX.And sorry for my English
