Whites and Minelabs

You know, my first high end detector was a DFX. I loved that thing and still do. They are great detectors. My only issue is that it never got the depth of the Explorers. All I have to do is simply visit a Whites forum and you see these guys getting excited because they found a Mercury dime! Heck, sometimes it even makes it to the Whites hompage. Then I check out the Minleab forums and not only are people finding Mercury dimes but Walkers and Barbers etc all in one hunt.

Anyways, my reason for rambling is because I have been looking at getting a new detector to replace my Sovereign for land hunting and I am sold on the Explorer 100%. Not to kncok any other brands but Minelab has sure sold itself to me with the Explorer. I look forward to posting some finds as soon as I get my new Explorer and put in some time with it.

I sold my XLT and used the money to help buy the Explorer 2. Best thing I have ever done as far as finding money. I have found 3 late 1700 coins, several large cents, many silver coins and about a dozen indians in the same places I went over with the XLT. You wont be sorry. Please be patient, the first hour I used this thing I wanted to beat it against a tree, it makes so many wierd noises. Bury some coins at different depths and listen to them. I have had this thing about 3 months and Im still learning. One thing for sure though, if you follow me with a XLT you wont find much if anything I leave behind.

I started out with an XLT 8 years ago. I was totally new to the hobby. I remember asking a Whites guy on the phone, "How deep will it go?" I also remember thinking it was odd that he hesitated and gave me a sort of noncommittal answer then finally he said, "about a foot." Heck, I thought it was the obvious question.

In all fairness, I must say I was a novice for sure... I used the machine for a year and the only thing I found deep was a large cent in real loamy woods soil at around 9". Oh, I tried to get more depth - that became a little game of how to tweak the machine a bit more to get the most depth. Then during the fall we had a couple of months of drought. It was a drought on coins deeper than four inches too. Finally I buried some coins in my garden and tried to find them. The results confirmed my suspicions.

I went to a Fisher CZ 7a Pro machine for more depth. It had the depth for sure but after a year or so I was looking to get something different. That is when the Explorer came out.

My first trip out with the XS was to a local park. I found a measured 11" deep wheat cent. The signal was just a tiny peep of a high tone but it repeated in both directions. I kept digging and digging finally the last chunk of sticky soil had the cent still in the middle.

Now that is what I was looking for. No tweaking - just about all the depth I could want with a decent ID (at depth).

The only bad thing is that it was fun to change detectors once in a while. I just don't think there is a better one out there.

Nice finds they are too! I can't wait to get my hands on another Explorer. I miss that thing.
