White's classic SL III vs GoldscanIV . What's the best ???

Good morning,
I'm not new to the hobby of metal detecting but now I'm just looking for a new metal detector and want to buy, after some others VLF machines, a pulse induction one. In a store near where I live I found two used (old) machines, a white's sl III and a goldscan IV but the store guys can't tell me how deep they go, becouse they sell consumer electronics but aren't specialized in metal detectors. For example I would like to know at how many inches or centimeters they can detect (in air test) e.g. 1 euro and if these units are really pulse induction or some other type of metal detectors.
I want to use it for coin hunting and maybe on the beach for rings and others.
The prices are very interesting but before buy one of these two I want to know if they are good enough and what's the best one.

Anybody can help me???
 
The Goldscan-4 is a very good PI. Whites can't touch it for its intended use. How much are they asking for the GS-4?

they ask 420 euros for the goldscan IV and 250 euros for the White's SL 3 , but both are used and they haven't any part or component for replacement there. They sell this stuff as is, i mean with no warranty at all but I think the units are ok, except for small cracks on rubber things and plastic in the goldscan one.

Anyway I think these are good prices compared to other stores here in italy that sell new units only.

That Goldscan unit is very special. It has a ground cancel mode and the ability to disc. out small iron. How do Euros convert to the US dollar?

Here in europe I know that the current change eur/us dollar is
about 1.20 and so 420 euros are about 504 us dollars.

Even if discriminate mode is not up to TR standards, you will still have depth that will blow you away.
 
Make your best CASH offer-regardless, anywhere near that price it is a steal.
 
Hi Nytrogen,

I am not sure what specific application you have in mind for the detector. By this I mean, if you are going to hunt mainly for coins in parks and yards or hunt on fresh water beaches where there is a lot of trash, then my guess would be the Whites would be the best unit overall.

Both units should give you decent depths if they are working properly. However, the Whites will have a superior discrimination feature and will be the one less likely to be out of adjustment.

If you are going to work salt water beaches then the Goldscan might be the better choice for gold items and for maximum depth. The down side is, the discrimination feature is not the greatest on the Goldscan so plan on digging much more trash.

Remember, the Goldscan (GS) is quite old and does have a few limitations. One recommended change is to have the GS modified to add the autotune feature. This will make the unit much more stable.

thanks for the useful informations. At the moment I want a machine for deep hunting on the beach, so I think that the goldscan is a good candidate for me. I know the white's behaviour because one friend has one and it's truly really stable and with a good pinpointing also but I'm not sure how deep it goes, especially in hi mineralized ground. I think that SL 3 seems much like an optimized VLF instead of a real pulse induction but I'm not sure of that. Depth, from what I know, is not the best anyway.
I have used the SL 3 on the beach but think it is too far away from my needs in this kind of hunting. I know nothing about goldscan IV. Just want to know how deep the old goldscan can reach before buy a used one.

If you want to hunt salt water beaches, the best and deeepest is the PI, as long as it isn't an area with alot of iron pieces from off shore ship wrecks. While the Goldscan4 is a good deterctor it will have to be modified to do the job right. The auto-tune needs to be set and it needs to run at a lower number Usec for senstitivity on small gold. It currently runs at 15usec and you need to get down to 10Usec. There is only a few people in US that can modifiy one, in Eurrope it would be Eric. It also needs to be modified to use Minelab adapter for their large coils to detect deeper. After doing all this and the expense involved, it may be better to look at a new detector, such as the Goldquest SS, which is newer technology and does all the above. Don

thanks for the hints. I think that maybe at the end I'll buy a goldquest SS instead of the old goldscan IV and also because they sell it without any warranty.
