Hi all, I'm new to the board, as well as, the hobby. I've yet to purchase a detector. My question is , is this a good detector for a beginner? I don't want to by something really cheap only to have to sell it to buy something better later on. I see that Kellyco has a package deal around 349.00. Is this what I need? I have some tailing piles behind my house and I also want to use it for coins etc. Any info would be appreciated.

No, that machine is based on older technology. You would be better off with a Whites prizm 5 or a Garrett Ace 250 for a beginners machine.
If you want to coinshoot and hunt gold nuggets your either going to need a machine like the MXT or get 2 different machines.
I am not saying the lower prices machines cannot find nuggets, they just are not good at separating mineralization in the ground.

Good and Not! Maybe!! This is a user issue (new or old tech) really does not matter! I have the old (classic series)(not classic 5's not the same)analog and it will find !!! I have a prizm (digital)and it will find as well!! For 349.00 you can get a lot of metal detector on the used detector market! You can do alot better the classic 5 this is some what of a misfit! Get a used White IDX PRO that way you can get extra coils and if you out grow the unit it has a good resale value, And you can upgrade the IDX. Don't forget it is your money get the biggest band for your buck !!!! Check with the vast no. of experienced users here and don't be in a rush / learn about the metal detector you want/ price range. I'd keep lookin but don't discount "old school" in favor of digital for "new school" sake many digital detectors can not keep up with a good analog detector. Good luck! gottit

It's a Whites Classic II made for KellyCo by Whites.

The performance is in the same league as the Whites Classic II, and it operates just like one. Very good unit to hunt in trashy areas like school play grounds.

Don't worry about this out dated stuff, it performs better than a lot of the new units. It's a fine unit, and you won't go wrong with it.

When you order it, ask to speak with JW at KellyCo, he will take good care of you. If your not happy, he'll work it out with you.

[size=large]The short answer is, YES. Naturally, I'm going to have to tell you that ANY detector can be good for a "beginner" since we all have different level of learning and understanding. I have a couple of good friends I hunt with and Aundrea started out new-to-the-hobby with an XLT. She still has it and uses it as it's part of a 2-detector 'team' for her. Chris, her husband, later got hooked and started with a DFX. He's sold it. After meeting them we hunted a good deal together, both working local city parks, doing some woodchip marathons, and traveling to some ghost towns. For woodchips and ghost towns hunting, I mainly used my modified IDX Pro and encouraged them to get a Classic model with target ID., Aundrea did when I found a new Classic ID, which makes up the other half-of her 2-detector battery.

Chris later saw the benefits and bought a Classic 5-ID from Kellyco after I had done a field test on it. It made a good pick for him as he is able to hunt close to Aundrea with it regardless of which of her White's she is using due to the difference in the operating frequencies.

Before Chris parted with his DFX he had acquired a Minelab Explorer II, a few years ago, and has since added a Classic IDX Pro to make a 3-detector battery for his hunting needs. Aundrea took my advise and switched the 8" from the Classic to her XLT and mounted a 6
