Whites DFX suggestion

bad boy

New member
I was running the coin and jewelry program today, One of Whites presets. I took it over to my coin garden and it would not see one of the coins I have planted at 6ins I increased the gain to 3 and it picked it up right away. Do any of you run a gain of 4 if the ground permits you to do so?? Also is raising the preamp gain enough, or should I add something to it. I just want simple, I want to go out and hunt and not have to mess around with my machine, all suggestions are welcome, I am coming off my XLT. I do feel the DFX is a little more neurotic then the XLT. I have the Double D eclipse 6&10 coil. Why Whites decided to make this coil all white has me scratching my head.

The factory setting that you want and will transform the DFX is the factory Relic setting, use that and also coupled with the 10x6 coil that will totally change the detector, the CandJ mod is a waste of time in my mind its restricting it.

The 10x6 coil is a very good coil and does work very well on the DFX,the reason as i understand it being white in colour is that its stays stable when the weather is hot,i think it is supposed to reflect the heat to keep the coil stable.

The main change that you want to do is use Relic mode, then once you have a few hours on the clock with it you can then alter a few more setting, but certainly not the current mode that you are using.

OK I will give that a go, I take it that the preamp gain is higher on this preset. The only thing that bothers me is all the different tones, as the Relic setting is in mixed mode? Correct me if I am wrong. I appreciate the suggestion and I will try it. Once I a able to tolerate this relic mode, what would you as far as making any more adjustments. I had the machine with the preamp maxed out (4) and it ran stable with no over load reading on the meter. I will do what you said and will take further advise soon, Thank You
p.s. I am finding coins and silver coins using just the presets, but I always felt I missing coins that others left behind. Most all my coins are retrieved at 4ins or less

Keep it simply, just try a prog that is not restricting your finds at the moment, you can tweak a few settings after giving it a few more hours on the clock.

I have been usinmg my DFX for nearly 8 years, most folks base a custom prog around the Relic mode.

Keep us in the loop

Thanks again for your help, I will try this a couple of days in my own back yard, to see what I missed after detecting it off and on for 20 years. When I go off of my presets, I some how think that I am not programming the machine correctly and wasting my time or missing lots of targets. I was at that Rod and Gun club yesterday and I can't believe those shot gun shells can fool the machine the one it does. And the the number would be all over the place. most of them landed in around 22, but I dug some that were in the 30's -40's. This is what I don't understand. You would think that if you dug one at 22 the rest would be close to that number. I passed up at least 50 targets. Then I started thinking, to dig them all out as they could be masking a good target. The owner had tilled the filed up many times and I have been trying to stay away from that area. I could not believe how quiet the machine was when I went to the field. If I detect the field I was going to put my stock coil back on so I can cover more of a area. I was placing sticks in the ground so I know where I have been. I really hate to start running strings in the area, its not my place but I have been detecting like it was my own, picking up sticks that fell from the trees, etc. I also do not want to over welcome the area. being there too many days in a row I am avoiding. Sooner of later they will think I am a pain in the, you know what. I have a park not far from me that I did not hit this year. Every year they have a 3 day block party and that was months ago. I am sure there were other detectors checking the area out and cherry picking. I really do not care to find clad coins, but it does keep your interest. Once I start to move around a little better I may go there this morning, What am I waiting for??, off I go........Pete

OK I tried that Relic program and I don't like the mix mode. I know plenty of guys like it. I would want to program around something that does not use that mix mode. I found by setting the preamp gain to 3 and even 4 helped with the depth big time. It sees my dime at 7ins in my coin garden. I did not adjust AC or DC Sensitivity. I am reading that these have to come into the picture, so your pin pointing will work correctly. I have the Book Diggin deeper and there is a Flow chart to test the DFX when raising your preamp Gain. I did not try it yet but will next time I am out. I am getting my snow blower ready for winter and putting other equipment to sleep for the winter. I don't want to get caught off guard. new belts on the snow blower and she us ready. So no mixed mode or Tone ID for me on the DFX. I would like to hear what else I can do, so please send in the suggestions

I tried Mixed Mode again, I even tried the Tone ID. I am not liking either of those. I can not handle the noise. I understand lots of you like using these modes but I am sure there are some like myself do not. if you can help me out with a simple coin program that does not use Mix Mode or Tone ID , I would appreciate if you can hook me up. You can PM me or I will give you my email address. I am using the DD 6&10 Eclipse coil on the DFX. If you have one for thew XLT, I can use that also. I have been using Coin and jewelry program, preset from Whites and I have been doing pretty good with it. I think I found some coins at 5ins. I just don't want to miss anything and I could start all over on my own property. It is a half acre of lawn and I am sure there are coins under me. I did have a friend bring over his Minelab Sovereign , but he did not find any coins. So if anyone can shoot me a program that worked for them, it will give me a start. Thanks for listening, Pete

inmybunker@gmail.com Just put "metal detecting" for the subject line on the email, Good Hunting!!!!!!!!!!! and Take it Lite

All those "programmable" machines have these preset programs (i hope). These presets will give you some decent performance and will run in most environments. But if you want the most out of your machine you have to set it up to the area you're going to hunt. And the more settings you have to adjust, the longer it takes to come to hunting.
To this was for all the higher end machines like the XLT, Explorer, DFX, V3i... and I worried about the settings during the hunt. Did I really pick up the right setting? Are there deeper targets? And with that in mind the hunt was a torture as most of the time the detector was tweaked.
To me this was a no go. Thought the next one will do it better, but no.
So I'll stick with the detectors I have, spending more time on digging and cleaning finds.

Account of all the programming and my age getting up there, its getting harder and harder for me to figure things out but I try. This is why I was thinking of going back with the M6. its a turn on and go with only 2 knobs if I remember correctly. All these years of detecting and I dob't have a program that I can trust other then Whites presets. I heard many a guys tell me that they are no good and wasting my time. But I have found plenty of coins. I just want to be able to go back to my hunt sites and see if i can pull any deep coins out of the ground. I have a Double D 6&10 eclipse coil on the DFX. I can get coins out of the ground at 4ins, maybe 5ins if I am paying close attention. I am like you, I want to hunt and not mess around with numbers when I am out in the field. I just want a little more, out of the DFX and I will be happy. Most coins are at the depth I mentioned, but those deep ones I am after now

Oh, don't get me wrong, bad boy. If so, I'm sorry. I'm not going to say these are "not good" and it's a waste of time to tweak them. Only saying those are not for me. I'm like many others, and you say like you, more on the switch on and search site. Had the M6 and IMO this is a very good coin shooter. But if you're after relics and more depth, like me, then the MXT is one of the best White's you can get (MXT or MXT Pro, both perform equal).
The DFX has a learning curve like the XLT or the other ones. And if you like it and will tweak it, step by step, I think you'll dig some deep things. The DD 6x10 Eclipse is a great coil, but you have to adjust the DFX to it's best performance.
Do you have the stock coil for the DFX? If not, try to get a new one. It's listed on White's web-site. This one is very deep and sensitive. Since I've tested it it didn't come off the MXT.
Having both coils, the 950 old style and the 950 new, all I can say is, they're different like night and day, or more like a bus and a roadster.

Good Luck with your DFX and hopefully some one chime in to give you some more advice.

Hey bad boy, I just read over this thread. To keep it simple instead of going into every setting I'll suggest this:
1) always start out with a pre amp gain of 3. If the DFX it is stable and smooth try increasing it to 4. 3 will get you good depth though so don't worry if you can't. Also do a quick for EMI / RFI by holding the coil straight out and pull the trigger, if it isn't wavering, blipping & flipping numbers you are pretty good to run hot so long as you get a good ground balance and the mineralization isn't a problem.

2) move your DC sense up to improve pinpointing. You are looking for deeper coins so you want to really center over them. Remember too high a setting will may cause you to have to "shrink" the signal response from large targets near the surface to pinpoint those easier. I like the VCO on for pinpointing.

3) A/C sense should be increased as high as you can and maintain stability.

4) open up the discriminator to accept into the upper range of the negative numbers. Say to -20 or -30, disc out nothing in the positive range. Remember +95 is also used for some targets that can't be accurately classified (esp due to depth).

5) the Digging Deeper book - memorize the sequence for relationship for the 3 settings above.

6) check every so often to be see if the ground balance is correct. Coil on ground, pull trigger and raise it a couple feet. It shouldn't blare or go completly silent. You should still hear the threshold. also you can do it by darting with the coil out infront off the ground 2 feet or so, pull trigger and lower to the ground. Is it steady. Be sure you aren't over any metal. I like to run a little GB offset +1.
Start with these - keep it simple. I used both the XLT and DFX for a long time. I preferred the 6" (5.3") coil over 6x10 for depth on coins. I have the V rated 6x10" for my V3i but I'm thinking of getting the 5.3 to do some comparison testing.
Since you have a test plot, keep testing over it and read up on sweep speed / recovery delay. You may want to tweak it for different coils and styles of searching.
Hope this helps and is not too much info.
HH - Bruce

Thanks for the help. And that goes to the entire forum. I feel very comfortable on here, and really appreciate the help when I ask. Thanks to All..............Pete

much more than the DFX, here are some 'simple' suggestions because, believe me, 'I like simple.'

A Pre-Amp Gain and /or AC Sensitivity that are too low will inhibit depth of detection. Using too much Discrimination can also inhibit depth of detection. Search coil selection can also inhibit depth of detection, as well as messing up the Recovery Speed and other things. So, to keep it simple, try these ideas.

1.. Accept from -40 to +95 in the Discrimination.

2.. Set the AC Sensitivity to '75.'

3.. Select a Pre-Amp Gain setting of '3.' You can try for '4' but if it's unstable, reduce it to '3'.

I prefer to have Mixed Mode Audio 'OFF'; Tone ID 'OFF'; Ratchet Pinpointing 'OFF'; and Auto-Trac 'OFF.'

I leave other settings as they are, get a good automated GB, then not sweep too slowly. I also prefer the 950 coil (or the new 9" Spider' coil) for more open areas, or the 5.3 Eclipse (a 6½" diameter coil) for most hunting. These are Concentric designed coils and they can get slightly better depth-of-detection over similar sized Double-D coils, and also be more stable and have better rejection, especially in iron infested sites.

Monte, its been awhile since I spoke with you, Which program should i modify?? most guys say use the relic mode. I could just take mixed mode out of the picture. Thanks for the heads up. You have helped me in the past, and I saved your post from years ago. I will wait to hear back from you, You can use my email if you like inmybunker@gmail.com When you sent me emails it used to be petebrandjake@yahoo.com. That account has closed. So use the first one I gave you. Have a great and upcoming weekend...Pete

Also is this for the XLT or DFX, or can I use both with this program. I find the DFX to be a little more neurotic then the XLT. I have a XLT Spectrum and I will never part with that machine as I found so many coins with it. I also like the XLT over the DFX but I am thinking because I had the XLT longer and just feel more confident with the XLT. its a shame that I never messed with my controls and used just factory settings. But now I feel like I can improve my finds, after reading this forum

I have personally owned 23 XLT's and 4 or 5 DFX's. The DFX's were all more annoying than the XLT's, and they didn't lock-on quite as well or often even didn't match the depth. 'Neurotic' was a good reference you used.

I will use your e-mail later today and send you my three Custom Programs that I use in the XLT. From them I only make subtle changes as needed/desired.

I also sent you a PM reply to your questions about the MXT and MXT All-Pro.

I have an appointment to get to, but will e-mail information later today.

Monte
