whites idx mods

The pro at a local shop has said the SAT on my classic idx doesnt work anymore because of the mods that have been done to it. What the heck is he talking about?

SAT: Self Adjusting Threshold, is a good way to put it.
Pass the coil over a target, and hold very still on top of it. Does the target tone disappear or does it stay as loud for as long as you hold the coil there ?? If the target tone fades out, the SAT is working.

Yea! It fades. Thanks Mr.Bill.

Perhaps the Pro you used to described the person that looked at your detector, was not such a Pro as one thought or better yet, as he thought he was.
I think you will find there were other motives for him saying such. I would be very leery about accepting anything he may say, or offer. He should have known better.

Well Mr.Bill, I'm going to give him the benefit of doubt. What I did was trade a minelab musketeer advantage for a "Mr.Bills" modified classic idx. The guy I traded with is from out of town and we decided to meet at a local mining supply shop near my home. Well we made the trade and had lunch then went our seperate ways. I went back inside of the shop because I needed a new probe and the manager at the shop asked if he could see it. Sure I said and he did a bench air test on it and took a chunk of rock and put a coin behind it and ran it under the coil.Pointed out the defect and went and got a new idx pro off the shelf and showed me what it was suppose to do, but now I'm confussed and everything so I'll just go back and find out what the hell he's talking about and let you know for sure. I could have sworn he said the SAT wasn't working though.
And since I have you on the line I was wondering if Any electical shop would have a switch that can replace a broken "All Metal/Disc" switch for a musketeer colt. Mines stuck in the all metal mode.
Thanks again for your keen knowledge.

Hi Dang
I have no idea that the IDX that you have, and I modified, is still that same as it left my shop. The modifications I do to the IDX does not include doing anything to the SAT, and it does not affect it. Now there is a slight exception to this statement I must clear up. There have been a few request for modifications that include a switch installed to give the user an option to set the SAT at a different speed. This switch, if installed, would be in the front of the detector box, Rt. side, in front of the sensitivity control.
In either case it would not affect the dog, and pony show the dealer tried to pull over on you with the rock, coin thing. The circuit modifications I do to the IDX, are the same that the factory does to the IDX Pro, and mechanically I move the ground balance, and the threshold controls to the outside.
I suspect your unit had the ground balance out of adjustment, and or discriminator adjustments set to high. Also was the sensitivity set the same, and same coil size ??

Gad! I would hate to think that, Ive handed him more money than I ever gave a dentist just this past year alone. But as far as I know, I have no problems with the detector out on the field. As a matter of fact Mr.B, I found my first ever gold with her today. A braclet about 4 inches down near a drinking fountain at a park.
Shame about the Minelab. Guess I'll just stick with my trusty Toltec 100 as my back-up. Thing weighs as much as my truck. I'm going to make a hip mount for it out of a plastic box to make the load lighter. Thank-you for your great responces Mr.Bill.
Another thought about the dealer. Could it be he's just stupid?
Dang

Sorry to bother you again but I was reading in another site and "auto tracking" was mentioned. And
I thought to myself that maybe that's what the pro was talking about, would that make more sense with that rock test thing he did? And does the classic idx have it?

Here is the instructions I supply with my modified units. Perhas it will help you setting up your unit.

Instructions: Classic III, ID, & IDX, & Pro series, Modified.

Adjust Threshold first.
Threshold Setting:
Pull trigger, and adjust the Threshold control to hear the Threshold audio comfortably. One needs to set the Threshold audio loud enough to hear strongly, so that you can set the Ground Balance. Reset it to softer levels for deep hunting in the All Metal mode.
Ground Balance: *
Pull trigger, and hold on or set trigger forward, locked on. Adjust Threshold audio to your hearing. Holding coil a couple of feet above ground parallel, lower coil to ground. The Threshold audio should remain at the same level. If the Threshold audio rises or drops, the Ground Balance control can be adjusted one way or another, so that lowering the coil to the ground the Threshold audio stays the same. Setting it this way would give you a neutral Ground Balance point. Having a slight increase when lowering coil to ground would give you a positive Ground Balance offset. The same in reverse, if the audio went slightly silent, giving you a negative Ground Balance offset. They could be times being a little (+) positive, or (-) negative ground balanced, may enhance target response.
* Ground balance adjustment has a direct affect on the display reading, (IDX). The display has been factory pre-set at a slightly positive (+) ground balance setting. Adjusting ground balance up or down a little from this point, should have negligible affect on the display accurateness.
Power Boost Discriminate:
Boost circuitry comes into affect at about the 4 o

Thanks! I most certainly can use them. Yuo know at first when I traded units I thought I got screwed. But I'm really enjoying using the Wnites classic IDX-M so much more then I did the Minelad Musketeer Advantage. I couln't get that thing ground balaced at all. But I can with the whites and even the old Toltec I picked up. And speaking of the mighty toltec I went to the dollar tree and picked up a wire basket and made my own hip-mount. Now I can swing'er for hours without my arm falling off.
Thanks again for the instructions.
