Who uses a pinpointer and what brand do you like?

Thinking it's about time to get a pinpointer. I can see the advantages but would like to hear some opinions, good and bad. Also what is your favorite brand and why. Who has the best deals, should I buy new or used? Thanks.

I use a modified Bounty Hunter (teknetics) pinpointer...the cheapo green meany...I had to tape the battery door on, replaced the buzzer with a bigger 6V version, and added an external LED, so I can see it at night...It is a no motion detector, and I have it set to ring out when a dime is 1" from the tip...Has been a faithful companion and helped me find many a mysterious coin in a hole, but mostly those ones that get stuck just under the grass roots...you know the ones...:surrender:

I just received my Automax v.4 and have already put it to good use.

I went through and re-dug some frustrating targets in my yard, and finally found the elusive little rascals that I couldn't pinpoint otherwise!

i never could get my automax to work right, don't even know where its at right now. a guy in our club wanted to try one so i let him use it. he and the club president both tried it but couldn't get it to work right either. i need to find where i put it so i can try it again.

I take the knob and turn the sensitivity all the way up until it beeps constantly, then turn it slowly until it stops. ( about half-way )
then I tap it lightly on the ground to make sure it won't start beeping again on it's own and test it on my ring. It has about a 3/4 to 1 inch depth depending on the mass of the metal.

My daughter had fun with it just waving the wand over the surface of the grass, and she found a 1 foot chain just poking above the surface and a toy car, lol.

I don't know how well they work, I'm pretty new myself. However, there was a post here that showed one from company called Harbor Freight Tools that had one for $15. I know it won't be like one of the top of the line ones but I figure for a beginner like myself it's a good starting point. If I don't like it I've only lost $15. If I like it and it gets beat up from over use, I don't mind spending the money on a better one.

I got an old Automax V2. I really like it, well built, you can actually probe the ground with it without worrying much about breaking it. I really use the sensitivity knob allot, it has good range. It is a bit big and bulky, about half the size of a nightstick. There might be holsters available for these type, but I made my own starting with a nice tape measure compartment from a tool belt, cut a hole in the bottom and reinforced. Then I attached my digging knife sheath to the side, added a loop for a homemade smaller steel probe, and am going to add compartments on the other sides for batteries and a more secure smaller pouch for finds. I've been using this setup quite a bit and might get pics when its all done. heres a pic i found of the pinpointer. HH, JJ

TONY66 I saw those too, and have been wondering if anyone has field tested one of them yet. If you want to see a pointer in action, you should watch BHLANSTARS video.Maybe that will be what I save my clad for since I got a few batteries to last awhile. I like to let the hobby sort of pay its own way if you know what I mean.

Well I decided to go the cheap route and ordered the Cemtech $15 detector from Harbor Freight. Tried to buy it from the local store but it wasn't stocked. So in a few days it should arrive on the Brown Truck of Happiness. Hope to have a little time to try it out, seems to rain non-stop, grass needs cutting constantly, and work my day job too. Hope to post some pics with it in action soon.

I have the Ultra Tinytec 8.5 inch one. It has the vibration mode as well as the audible signal. The light on it is as bright as a penlight. The unit can be set so that it will power off when the probe is turned up.You can also defeat this mode. Well built and priced right.

I bought mine from Hunters Haven. It was received in 3 days. I bought the 8.5 inch one for 69.95 with about 4 dollars freight. You can find it by using google and enter Tineytec pinpointers. They also have some cheaper priced ones. The price beats 120 dollar or more priced pointers. The quality is excellent.

Ok, I just bought the Ultra Tinytec direct from their website. It is on sale for 44.95 plus 4.60 shipping. Now the problem is getting to the mailbox before the wife does. If she finds the Cen-tech and the Tinytec in the same week I'm gonna be wearing one of them someplace painful and awkward.

Wooo Hoooo! Just got the DeluxeTinytec pinpointer via "The Brown Truck of Happiness". Life is good. Now maybe I can find those coins (pull-tabs) a little quicker.

I use a cheapo from Harbor Frieght $15.00 plus shipping.
It does the job, but there are other pinpointers out there that cost much more. The Harbor Frieght Cheapo is for the severely buget minded.

I plan on ordering a 570 Vibra Probe. Think it will be a good way to go as I will be using headphones. dl_mooney ... Time Ranger

I use a Sherlock DTS PRO it cost around $75 has a bright light for night hunting sensitivity can be adjusted hasn't let me down. I also read alot about the Harbor Freight pin pointer for about $14. Happy Hunting.

I ordered the Harbor Freight pinpointer on 06/07/08 and it has been on back order ever since. I call customer service once a week to follow up. Yesterday the cs rep said it should ship on 07/25/08. S-L-O-W boat from China!:rage:
