I bought the DX-1 probe for my MXT a few weeks ago. I have been hunting for nearly 30 years and never really figured I needed a probe. I know a lot of detectorists say that it cuts down the retrieval time by 50% or so. But I was always pretty good at pinpointing. Well, I justified the purchase by figuring I could use the probe to find the target after digging the initial hole instead of lifting the machine and sweeping the plug, the hole, the plug, the hole etc. Yesterday was the first day I used it and I have to say it worked exactly like I had hoped. I would find a signal, kneel down and dig the hole, switch the toggle to probe and find the target. That darn little thing is hot at 2 - 3 inches and the VDI readings were the same with the probe as the coil making target verification a snap. Once I pocketed the coin, I stood back up, saddled up the probe and started detecting again. STOP! Did you understand that sequence? Notice anything missing? Neither did I when I was doing it. I must have hunted for 10 minutes before I finally realized that I had forgotten to switch the SunRay box back to the coil mode. Not just once, but three or four times throughout the afternoon. Have any others out there done this and will admit it? If so, will I ever get in the habit of switching it back, or will this DX-1 be up for sale soon? HH

Maybe if the switch was on the mount so that when you uncliped it, the probe would be active and then when you put it back in the clip the coil would be active. I'm thinking about buying one of those probes and am curious what they cost.

I'm Looking to buy as soon as you do!!!
Seriously, I could see myself doing the same thing, can't think of a simple solution - except most places I've been hunting if I don't have a signal every 20 - 30 seconds Id think something was wrong

I believe the DX-1 probes lists for about $175. I got mine shipped for less than that from a dealer. If you want to know those particulars, email me and I will share that with you.
Just thinking out loud, but seems pretty simple to replace a two position toggle switch with a simple two position compression type button switch. Not a lot different than the one to either turn the light on in refrigerator door or turn the dome lights on in your car door. Just another set of contacts for the down position. When you remove the probe from the saddle, it would allow the switch to spring into one position and send the loop circuitry through the probe. When you put the probe back in the saddle, it would depress the button on the switch to a position that sends the loop circuitry back to the coil. VERY INTERESTING. Lets all put our heads together and see what we come up with. Just remember that you will void your warranty when you start messing with the stock unit. HH

Maybe a mercury switch with electrodes in each end of the bulb. Then adjust for one side on when the detector is horizontal, and the other side to be on when held in the normal position.
(Not sure such a switch exists, but I think I recall seeing something like it in my Thermostat.)
Just an idea to automate the switching.

They have probably heard it from others. If not your concerns may prompt them to improve the product so that when I buy mine it will already have the modification included...
AT NOT EXTRA COST !!!!!!!!!!!....
